28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is a strange, brutal sequel that shifts the franchise’s central danger from infected bodies to the beliefs and choices of the people who survive them. Nia DaCosta’s slower, more contemplative approach trades some of the previous film’s kinetic momentum for an uneasy mix of gore, dark comedy and compassion. That swerve makes the film more memorable than comfortable.

What is 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple about?

Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, this 2026 horror film is the fourth entry in the 28 Days Later franchise and the second installment of a new trilogy after 28 Years Later. Danny Boyle returns as a producer. The story begins directly after the 2025 film, following Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), young Spike (Alfie Williams) and Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell).

Sony’s spoiler-light synopsis sets up two strands: Kelson makes a discovery that could change the world, while Spike’s encounter with Crystal becomes a nightmare. Crystal leads a cult; Kelson is a scientist studying the Rage Virus, and Spike is a boy trying to navigate an increasingly unstable world. The film’s interest lies less in solving a puzzle than in watching how these people respond to a world where fear and power can distort human judgment. Sony Pictures’ official film page and FAQ

Does the sequel’s shift in focus work?

For the most part, yes—if you are open to a horror sequel that wants to unsettle and provoke as much as it wants to frighten. The infected remain part of the danger, but DaCosta gives the film’s most disturbing questions to the living: what people will do when they can impose their own order, and what compassion looks like in a world organized around violence.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Blu-ray + Digital
  • Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.

That emphasis produces the film’s most effective contrast. Crystal’s Jimmies embody cruelty dressed up as authority, while Kelson’s relationship with an infected Alpha opens a more compassionate, ethically curious path. The film does not make that contrast tidy or reassuring. Instead, it asks viewers to sit with the possibility that recognition and care can persist even when the world makes them seem irrational.

The shift also changes the pace. David Sims of The Atlantic describes DaCosta’s style as less kinetic than Danny Boyle’s preceding film and calls the sequel “gnarly, challenging, and an incredibly impressive swerve.” That is a useful description of both its strength and its risk: this is more character- and theme-led than a straightforward survival-action follow-up. David Sims’ review in The Atlantic

How do the horror, comedy and compassion balance?

The tonal blend is deliberately uncomfortable. Graphic violence can sit beside a moment of bitter humor, and the comedy does not make the surrounding cruelty harmless. Rather, it can make the film feel more disorienting: the characters’ capacity to joke, care or behave monstrously all survive side by side.

Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy calls the film “absolutely bonkers — and a triumph,” praising its combination of queasy violence and laugh-out-loud humor. He awards it three and a half stars out of four. That is Kennedy’s assessment, not an aggregate score or a claim that every viewer will respond the same way. Mark Kennedy’s Associated Press review

The film’s oddness is part of its appeal, but also the main dividing line. Viewers who want an unbroken run of tense, kinetic infected-versus-survivor action may find its pauses and thematic detours frustrating. Those willing to follow a more contemplative, mordant story may find that the detours are precisely what make this sequel distinct.

Should you watch the previous film first?

Yes. Because The Bone Temple begins directly after 28 Years Later, that 2025 film is the essential point of reference for its character situations and story continuity. AP reviewer Mark Kennedy says a newcomer need not necessarily return to 28 Days Later (2002), but should at least watch the previous year’s entry. Associated Press review and viewing context

Is it right for you? Content and viewing guidance

The Associated Press reports a running time of 109 minutes and an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for strong bloody violence, gore, graphic nudity, language throughout and brief drug use. That U.S. rating and advisory may not match classifications in other territories. Associated Press review

  • Consider it if: you enjoy horror that uses violence to explore ideology, mortality, trauma and compassion, and you welcome a strange mix of bleak humor and reflection.
  • Approach with caution if: explicit gore or graphic nudity is a deal-breaker, or you prefer a fast, action-first sequel with a more conventional tone.
