The sources available for this account do not confirm that Adam Driver laughed at that specific line, so his reaction should not be presented as fact.
What was Ricky Gervais’s Epstein joke?
While discussing his series After Life, Gervais said: “Spoiler alert, season two is on the way so in the end he obviously didn’t kill himself, just like Jeffrey Epstein.” The line connected the show’s plot to Epstein’s death. Gervais then added, “Shut up. I know he’s your friend, but I don’t care,” before moving on to a remark about attendees arriving on their own planes. Rev’s transcript of the January 5, 2020 monologue records the wording and sequence.
Where did the joke fit in the ceremony?
Gervais hosted the 77th Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The Epstein line was one part of his opening address, which took aim at Hollywood and its celebrities. A contemporary CBS News account of the monologue also describes the remarks about Epstein as part of Gervais’s broader roast. Its description that he “called out the stars in attendance for being friends with Epstein” is the reporter’s characterization, not a verbatim quotation from Gervais.
Did Adam Driver laugh at the joke?
The reporting cited here does not identify Adam Driver laughing in response to the Epstein line. ABC News Australia’s coverage of celebrity reactions describes reaction moments involving Tom Hanks and others, but does not establish Driver’s response to this particular joke. A YouTube listing for Gervais’s 2020 Golden Globes monologue identifies the video, but the listing alone does not establish which audience member appears at a given moment.
