Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBetter Man earned broadly favorable critic and audience ratings by giving the familiar music-biopic arc an unexpected visual form: Robbie Williams is portrayed as a CGI chimpanzee. That bold conceit, combined with choreographed musical sequences, Williams’s songs and a rise-and-fall story told from his perspective, gives reviewers more to engage with than a conventional star impersonation. The ratings show broad approval, not ten proven causes of it—and they do not mean every reviewer agreed.
How positive were the reviews?
In the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed in 2026, Better Man had an 89% Tomatometer from 227 critic reviews: 201 positive and 26 negative. That percentage is the share of counted critics who gave the film a positive review; it is not an average score out of 100. The Popcornmeter was also 89%, from 250+ verified audience ratings, with a 4.4/5 rating. Rotten Tomatoes defines that measure as the share of users with verified ticket purchases who rated the film at least 3.5 stars. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page displays these measures.
Metacritic’s 2024–25 listing showed a critic score of 77/100 from 42 reviews and a user score of 7.2/10 from 146 ratings, both labeled “Generally Favorable.” Metacritic’s figures are separate aggregates with different scales and samples; they should not be averaged with Rotten Tomatoes percentages. Metacritic’s Better Man page provides those scores. Counts and ratings can change over time.
10 reasons Better Man’s reviews are so positive
1. Its central image is hard to mistake for another biopic
Instead of presenting Williams as a conventional screen impersonation of himself, the film depicts him as a CGI chimpanzee. Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial consensus makes that choice the defining departure, saying the film substitutes its marquee star with a VFX creation and “makes a monkey out of the traditional musical biopic to thrilling effect.” The consensus is an aggregator’s summary, not a statement that every critic praised the device.

2. The visual conceit can reinforce the film’s point of view
Paramount describes the story as uniquely told from Williams’s perspective. Read alongside the chimpanzee portrayal, that framing offers a possible reason the unusual image works for some viewers: it can be understood as a subjective way into the subject’s experience rather than a bid for literal resemblance. That is an interpretation of how the form may land, not a confirmed explanation of the filmmakers’ intent. Paramount’s official film description supplies the studio’s framing.
3. It gives the genre a fresh formal choice
The Rotten Tomatoes consensus explicitly contrasts Better Man with the traditional musical biopic. Many films in the genre depend on resemblance, impersonation and familiar milestones; this one gives reviewers an arresting question of form to discuss. Novelty alone does not guarantee a good film, but here the central choice is sufficiently prominent to shape the conversation around it.

4. The musical numbers provide spectacle
A surfaced Hindustan Times review excerpt praised the film’s “go-for-broke ambition” and “excellently choreographed song sequences.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a count of critical opinion, but it points to a concrete source of positive response: the songs are staged as set pieces, not merely inserted as background to the biography. The excerpt appears in the Rotten Tomatoes review listings.
5. Williams’s songs are part of the appeal
Rotten Tomatoes categorizes Better Man as a musical and features clips tied to Williams songs. Metacritic describes it as celebrating his Brit-pop hits. Those details make the music an evident draw for fans and a central part of the film’s identity, though they do not establish a soundtrack sales result or show what proportion of audiences attended for the songs.

6. The biography has a legible dramatic arc
Paramount’s synopsis frames Williams’s story through rise, fall and resurgence. That shape gives the film a clear dramatic spine: success and its costs can build toward a return. It is a familiar structure, but it also makes the biographical material easy to follow alongside the film’s less conventional visual approach.
7. The film is positioned as a personal account, not a detached portrait
Paramount says the story is told from Williams’s perspective and captures his “signature wit and indomitable spirit.” That is studio positioning rather than independent critical judgment. Still, a perspective-led approach can help explain why the film invites discussion of personality as well as career events, and why a stylized portrayal may fit its premise better than straightforward imitation.

8. The premise can support both comedy and feeling
In an excerpt hosted by Metacritic, RogerEbert.com critic Clint Worthington calls the conceit “nonsensical” while praising the film’s charm as enough to sell the gimmick. His response illustrates how the same choice can seem absurd and still be affecting or entertaining. It does not prove that all audiences or critics found the balance successful.
9. The film makes its ambition visible
The chimpanzee portrayal and elaborate musical staging make Better Man an unusually conspicuous creative gamble. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus calls the substitution daring, while the Hindustan Times excerpt praises the film’s ambition. These are critical readings of what appears onscreen—not evidence about the production budget, the level of financial risk or the views of every reviewer.

10. Favorable reception appears on more than one platform
Both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic showed broadly favorable critic reception in the cited snapshots, and each also showed favorable audience ratings. Agreement across platforms lends support to describing the response as broadly positive, but the sites use different methods, samples and scales. Their figures are not a single combined verdict, and aggregate approval does not erase negative reviews.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the ratings do—and do not—explain
Review scores establish how the film was rated within particular platforms’ samples; they do not reveal why each person liked it. The reasons above are a synthesis of the film’s official premise, aggregator consensus and specific review excerpts—not ten independently measured causes or claims that every review mentioned the same strengths. There was also criticism: a Metacritic-listed critic excerpt, for example, objected that the story was not cohesive. The positive aggregates therefore describe a prevailing response, not unanimous approval.
Release dates are historical, not a guide to current availability
Rotten Tomatoes lists a January 10, 2025 wide U.S. theatrical release and a February 11, 2025 streaming release. In a March 10, 2025 announcement, Paramount said the film would arrive on Paramount+ on March 11 in the United States and Canada. Those are past dates for specific markets; they do not establish where the film can be streamed now. Paramount’s announcement gives the historical U.S. and Canada date.
