Some rappers have worked with outside writers, but that does not establish that they generally did not write their own songs. The best-documented examples concern particular tracks or collaborations—and the evidence varies from credited songwriting to an artist’s account of an uncredited contribution. Here is what the reported cases actually show, and what they do not.
What “ghostwriting” means in rap
In its strict sense, ghostwriting means lyrics written by someone else whose contribution is kept covert. A named songwriting credit is different: it makes the contributor visible, even if listeners may not know exactly what they supplied. In everyday conversation, “ghostwriting” is also used loosely for reference recordings, co-writing, lyric suggestions, or a complete verse written by another person. Those are not interchangeable claims.
The 2024 edition of the Rap on Trial Legal Guide describes ghostwriting as covert use of lyrics written by other songwriters. For any particular song, a credit or an interview can point to another person’s contribution, but neither automatically tells us how much of the finished lyric that person wrote.
What the reported cases establish
| Artist or song | Reported outside contribution | Evidence and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Drake and Quentin Miller | Contributions associated with Drake songs | HotNewHipHop’s 2022 overview says Miller received credits; it does not support calling those contributions strictly uncredited ghostwriting. |
| Dr. Dre, “Still D.R.E.” | Jay-Z is listed as a songwriter | A reported credit does not resolve whether he wrote all of Dre’s verse, collaborated, or received credit related to production. |
| Kanye West, “Jesus Walks” and later albums | Rhymefest reportedly contributed to “Jesus Walks”; later albums have numerous credited contributors | These examples show collaboration on particular work, not that West generally did not write his songs. |
| Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Return to the 36 Chambers | Method Man reportedly said Wu-Tang members helped write parts | The account is about parts of a named album, not a finding about ODB’s entire catalog. |
| “Crush On You” | Cam’ron said he wrote the song for Lil’ Cease; the track appeared on a Lil’ Kim album | This is Cam’ron’s specific account of a song originally intended for Cease, not proof about Lil’ Kim’s songwriting generally. |
Drake and Quentin Miller: credited collaboration is not the same as ghostwriting
In remarks reported by The Guardian in 2015, Drake described music as collaborative and said, “I need, sometimes, individuals to spark an idea so that I can take off running.” He also said, “It’s just, music at times can be a collaborative process, you know?” Those comments acknowledge that other people can help generate ideas; they are not an admission that someone else wrote all his lyrics.

HotNewHipHop’s 2022 overview says Miller’s contributions appeared in credits. TIME also reported that Drake’s producer Noah “40” Shebib said Miller was credited on several songs and defended Drake’s involvement. Shebib’s comments are a collaborator’s account, not independent proof of who wrote every line on each track.
Dr. Dre and “Still D.R.E.”: a writer credit leaves room for questions
A HotNewHipHop article on the song’s writing credits lists Jay-Z among the songwriters of “Still D.R.E.” The article says it is unclear whether Jay-Z wrote Dre’s entire verse or worked on it with him, and notes that a credit could reflect production. The credit supports a reported songwriting contribution; by itself, it does not establish that Dre performed lyrics written entirely by Jay-Z.

Kanye West: collaboration on named works
HotNewHipHop’s 2022 overview points to the many credited contributors on West’s later albums and reports that Rhymefest partially wrote “Jesus Walks.” That is evidence of collaboration on identified work. It does not establish that West did not write his own songs as a general rule, nor does it specify the exact extent of each contributor’s work.
Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Ghostface Killah: keep the account to the work described
The same overview recounts Method Man’s account that Wu-Tang members, including Method Man, GZA, and RZA, wrote parts of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers. It also mentions a smaller contribution to Ghostface Killah. These are bounded claims about reported contributions; they should not be inflated into claims that either artist relied on outside writers for all or most of their songs.

“Crush On You”: Cam’ron’s account concerns a track for Lil’ Cease
FACT attributes this account to Cam’ron: “What happened was, [Untertainment CEO Lance] Un [Rivera] gave Mase $30,000 to write five songs for Lil’ Cease at that time and Mase gave me $5,000 of the 30 to write one or two of the songs… I wrote the ‘Crush On You’ song and they ended up keeping it for Lil’ Kim album but it was really for Lil’ Cease.” FACT also reports Cam’ron saying, “The original ‘Crush on You’ is all Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim isn’t even on the record.” This is a specific account of the song’s origin and intended recipient. It should not be used to conclude that Lil’ Kim did not write her own songs generally.

A 2022 HotNewHipHop overview cautions that some commonly repeated claims are unsubstantiated and that not every example can be definitively proven. That matters because a song credit, an artist’s account, and a rumor do not carry the same evidentiary weight. Nor does a named contribution reveal whether the outside writer supplied an idea, a reference track, a verse, or broader lyric work.

The available examples support a careful account of specific collaborations and claims—not a reliable list of ten rappers who, as a general rule, did not write their own songs. Treating every co-writing credit as proof of ghostwriting erases the distinction between acknowledged collaboration and covert authorship.
