Momo Ayase makes a persuasive case as Dandadan’s best female character because she is more than its action hero or romantic lead: she helps set the story in motion, develops powers central to its conflicts, and affects how other characters respond to danger. “Best” is a judgment, not an official ranking; here, the case rests on agency, personality, development, relationships, and contribution to the action. The examples below cover the anime’s opening story and avoid later manga-only developments.
Why Momo stands out
Dandadan begins with a clash of beliefs. Momo believes in ghosts but not aliens; her classmate Ken Takakura, whom she calls Okarun, believes in aliens but not ghosts. Their decision to test those beliefs at paranormal locations pulls both into a world where the supernatural and extraterrestrial are real. The official Shonen Jump+ series page and VIZ’s series page both foreground that contrast.
That setup matters because Momo is not a side character who enters the story only to support Okarun. Her choices and experiences are part of the engine driving it. These ten reasons explain why she can be argued to be the series’ standout female character—not why every viewer must rank her first.
1. She acts when someone needs help
Momo’s introduction establishes a pattern: she steps in when she sees Okarun being bullied. The official Shonen Jump+ premise presents this as the start of their connection. Her intervention is small compared with the supernatural battles to come, but it gives her agency before she has powers or a stake in the paranormal challenge. She chooses to help rather than waiting for the plot to make her important.

2. Her beliefs help launch the central conflict
The ghost-versus-alien disagreement is not just a bit of banter or a way to pair two opposites. Momo’s conviction that ghosts exist motivates the test that sets the story in motion, just as Okarun’s belief in aliens motivates his side of it. Neither worldview is decorative: the series makes both characters confront what they thought they knew.
3. Her abilities grow directly out of the premise
Momo’s psychic powers awaken after her encounter with aliens, according to her official Shonen Jump+ profile and the anime’s character profile. That link between her powers and the story’s collision of alien and spiritual forces makes her development feel integral to the premise, rather than like an unrelated upgrade bestowed on a supporting character.

4. Her psychic power is useful, not just spectacular
In the anime, Momo’s power gives her practical ways to respond when a fight becomes chaotic. She can use psychic force to control or move things and contend with spirits, turning a supernatural ability into a tool for improvisation rather than a one-note display of strength. ORICON’s character guide describes her abilities in those terms. The appeal is not simply that she can fight; it is that her powers give her options and let her make decisions in the middle of a fight.
5. Her toughness sounds like Momo, not a stock hero
Momo is blunt, quick to answer back, and unwilling to pretend she is impressed when she is not. Those traits give her confidence a distinctive voice. But she is not defined by being abrasive: her willingness to help Okarun shows a considerate side beneath the sharp replies. ORICON likewise describes her as outspoken and kind-hearted. The contrast keeps her from becoming a generic “strong girl” archetype.

6. She can be bold and openly romantic
Momo’s confidence does not cancel out her softer, more romantic side. She can be forceful when a situation demands it and still care about attraction, embarrassment, and the uncertain feelings developing around Okarun. ORICON notes this combination of boldness and girlish romantic sensibility. The anime treats those qualities as parts of the same person, rather than suggesting that romance makes her less capable.
7. Her connection to Seiko gives her background emotional weight
Momo’s family connection to spiritual practice is more than an explanation for why she believes in ghosts. Her relationship with Seiko, her grandmother, links the paranormal world to family knowledge and learned ways of protecting oneself. The anime’s scenes around those protective practices give that inheritance a personal dimension: Momo is not simply handed a supernatural identity; she has a relationship through which that knowledge is expressed. ORICON’s profile also discusses her family background and connection to Seiko.

8. Her relationship with Okarun develops alongside the action
Their connection has room to grow because they face danger together, argue, and make choices that affect one another—not because the story reduces Momo to a love interest. VIZ describes Dandadan as mixing paranormal battles with secret-crush dynamics. That combination suits Momo: her feelings are part of her emotional life, while her role in the conflict remains active and consequential.

Momo’s influence is not only a viewer’s interpretation. In an official MANGA Plus interview, creator Yukinobu Tatsu says that “Momo’s actions and words inspire those around her, motivating them to rise up, just like Superman.” That is a direct statement of what he sees in her role: she can help other people find the resolve to resist evil. Her effect on the story therefore extends beyond what she can do with her own powers.

10. Her creator’s affection is unmistakable
Tatsu is unusually direct about his attachment to Momo: “My favorite character is Momo.” In the same interview, he explains that he may redraw her if he has not made her as cute as he wants, before comparing her inspirational role to Superman’s. A creator’s favorite is not proof that a character is objectively the best, but the comment helps explain the care behind Momo’s mix of visual appeal, determination, and influence.
So, is Momo Dandadan’s best female character?
The case is strongest when “best” means a character whose personality, actions, relationships, and role in the plot reinforce one another. Momo helps begin the story, becomes a capable participant in its conflicts, retains a clear personal voice, and inspires people around her. That makes her a compelling choice for the series’ standout female character, even though no official ranking or consensus establishes a universal winner.
Shion Wakayama voices Momo in the anime, as confirmed by the official character profile and the December 16, 2023 cast announcement.
