Its scale, near-even Friday and Saturday grosses, positive early audience polls and reported impact at Cinemark help explain why the launch stood out—though the numbers show what happened, not a single proven cause.
How much did Beetlejuice Beetlejuice make on opening weekend?
TheWrap’s September 8, 2024 report rounded the domestic opening to $110 million, using the weekend estimate available at the time. Box Office Mojo lists the opening gross as $111,003,345 across 4,575 theaters. The film opened in the United States on September 6, 2024.

10 reasons the opening stood out
1. It made September feel like a major moviegoing month
At the time of its release, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had the second-highest September opening ever, according to TheWrap’s September 2024 report. Only Warner Bros.’ It (2017), which opened to $123.4 million, was ahead. That is a historical ranking from that report, not a claim about the current all-time list.

2. It crossed $100 million in a month where that was rare
TheWrap said the film was only the second September release to open above $100 million, after It. Clearing that threshold gave the launch unusual scale for the month, rather than merely making it a strong sequel opening.
3. It drew a large opening crowd across a broad theater footprint
Box Office Mojo records 4,575 theaters for the opening. Combined with the $111 million gross, that makes the result legible as a nationwide theatrical event. Theater count is distribution reach, however; it does not by itself measure demand or attendance per location.

4. Thursday previews added a substantial head start
TheWrap reported $13.5 million from Thursday previews in its contemporaneous opening-weekend coverage. That figure belongs to the report’s early accounting and should not be confused with the final daily gross sequence, which lists Friday through Sunday.
5. Saturday essentially matched Friday in the final daily record
Box Office Mojo lists Friday at $41,815,736 and Saturday at $41,804,322—a difference of just $11,414. TheWrap’s early report described Saturday’s then-reported $41.8 million as a 45% increase over Friday’s $28.3 million estimate. These are figures from different reporting stages; the final database daily totals show the two days nearly level. That shape is notable, but it does not prove that audience word of mouth caused the hold.

6. Early audience ratings were encouraging
TheWrap reported a B+ CinemaScore and a 4-out-of-5 PostTrak score from general-audience polling. Those results indicate a positive initial response among the surveyed moviegoers, not a guarantee of lasting word of mouth or an explanation for why people bought tickets.
7. The audience included adults beyond the original film’s youngest viewers
In TheWrap’s account of opening-day demographics, 76% of moviegoers were over 25 and 32% were ages 35–49. The figures suggest that adults were a large part of the opening-day audience; they do not establish that nostalgia, any particular performer or another factor caused them to attend.

8. Cinemark said the hit boosted more than ticket sales at its theaters
Cinemark reported that the film drove its best domestic September box-office weekend ever and its biggest September domestic opening for a title. The exhibitor also reported September weekend records for concessions and premium formats. Those are Cinemark-specific company records, not industry-wide results.
Cinemark President and CEO Sean Gamble said the film, alongside enthusiasm for shared theatrical experiences, drove the company’s records: “The juice was certainly loose as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, married with vibrant consumer enthusiasm for shared, theatrical experiences, drove Cinemark’s best domestic September box office weekend of all time, while conjuring up concessions and premium format records.”

9. One film mattered especially in a relatively quiet September
In a report on the film’s third weekend, the Associated Press said Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had earned more than $226 million domestically over three weeks, following a $110 million opening and a $51.6 million second weekend. The AP also reported a $329.8 million global total at that point. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian described the wider market context: “September has been a bit of a sleepy month and with around 47% of the revenue being generated by this single film.” That share referred to September revenue in the later report, not the opening weekend alone.
10. Its scale was striking beside the 1988 original
The Numbers’ franchise figures list the sequel’s opening at $111,003,345 and its domestic total at $294,100,435. For the 1988 original, the site lists an $8,030,897 opening and a $77,475,359 domestic total. These are nominal dollars, not inflation-adjusted comparisons, and the films opened decades apart under different theatrical conditions. The figures make the sequel’s commercial scale clear without establishing that it was more successful by every measure.

The launch clearly combined a historic September rank, wide release, substantial previews, a near-even Friday-to-Saturday result, positive early audience polling and an exhibitor-reported boost. Those facts make the opening impressive. They do not isolate how much any one factor—such as franchise recognition, casting, marketing or release timing—contributed.
The Numbers estimates the sequel’s production budget at $100 million and the original’s at $15 million. Those are third-party estimates, not verified studio disclosures; they cannot establish either film’s profit, which depends on costs and revenue beyond a reported box-office gross.
