Yes. The opening of the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer takes place after Charles Deetz’s death. ABC News identifies him as Lydia Deetz’s father and Astrid’s grandfather in its account of the scene, though neither the trailer’s reported exchange nor Warner Bros.’ official synopsis explains how he died.
What the trailer confirms
The film’s official trailer opens with Lydia comforting her daughter Astrid after a family loss. ABC News reports that the death is Charles Deetz’s: he is Lydia’s father and Astrid’s grandfather. The scene establishes that he has died before the events shown; it does not provide a detailed account of the death.
In the exchange reported by LiveNOW from FOX, Lydia says, “Death is hard.” Astrid replies, “Yeah, sometimes I think life is harder.” The lines focus on how the two characters are processing loss, rather than on its cause. LiveNOW from FOX’s trailer coverage reports the exchange.
How did Charles Deetz die?
The trailer confirms the death, but the sources describing its opening do not specify a cause. Warner Bros.’ official synopsis calls the event an “unexpected family tragedy” that brings three generations of Deetzes back to Winter River; it does not identify what happened to Charles. The best-supported answer is therefore that Charles is dead by the time of the trailer’s opening, while the cause is not established by the trailer or that synopsis.

How the death fits the film’s premise
Warner Bros.’ official film page describes the family returning to Winter River after the tragedy. The film brings together Lydia, her daughter Astrid, and other members of the Deetz family. Tim Burton directed the film; Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the screenplay, with Seth Grahame-Smith among the story contributors.
The studio’s trailer listing identifies Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara among the returning cast, alongside Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe. Warner Bros. announced a September 6, 2024 domestic theatrical and IMAX release, with international release beginning September 4, 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery later announced a December 6, 2024 exclusive Max streaming debut. Those are historical release announcements, not confirmation of current streaming availability. Warner Bros.’ trailer announcement and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max announcement give those dates.
