Wrestling memes often have two origin stories: the moment in the ring or on camera, and the later internet format that gave it a new life. Here are ten recognizable examples—not a measured ranking. Some origins are well documented; others remain uncertain. The Hell in a Cell entries draw on the same famous fall but use it in different ways.
1. The Undertaker throws Mankind off Hell in a Cell
At the 1998 Hell in a Cell match, The Undertaker threw Mankind (Mick Foley) from the top of the structure. WWE’s oral history recalls the fall and its aftermath; commentator Jim Ross’s call was, “As God is my witness, this man has been broken in half!” WWE’s oral history of the match preserves the moment as a piece of wrestling history.
Online, the footage became the setup for a separate bait-and-switch joke: a seemingly unrelated story is interrupted by the “Don’t let this distract you…” prompt, which leads into the fall. Know Your Meme credits Reddit user Shittymorph with popularizing this recurring copypasta and interviewed him about its format. Know Your Meme’s entry on the copypasta documents its internet life. The match is the source moment; the copypasta is the later meme.
2. John Cena’s “You Can’t See Me”
The gesture behind Cena’s taunt came from a dance his brother Sean showed him. In an excerpt from his book, Cena recalled: “This stupid song came on, we started dancing around and my brother Sean did this dance from a video where he moves his head around his hands.” WWE’s excerpt on the taunt’s origin connects the hand movement to that dance.

The meme takes the catchphrase literally: Cena is treated as invisible, so an image or video may show an empty space where he should be. That joke is an internet interpretation of the taunt, not the reason Cena created the gesture.
3. Shocked Undertaker Guy
The wide-eyed fan reaction comes from Ellis Mbeh, who was photographed after Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, ending Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak. WWE later interviewed Mbeh about the image’s spread and his experience. WWE’s interview with Ellis Mbeh identifies the person behind the expression.

As a reaction image, it conveys disbelief or shock. The original context matters: Mbeh’s face captured the crowd’s response to a major wrestling result, rather than being staged as a meme.
4. The Rock’s eyebrow
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson used his raised eyebrow as part of his wrestling persona, calling it the “People’s Eyebrow.” The gesture existed in the ring before it became a meme. Know Your Meme documents its later reaction-video form and a wave of renewed popularity in 2021. Know Your Meme’s history of The Rock eyebrow raise describes how the expression came to signal suspicion, judgment, or a skeptical pause.

6. Vince McMahon surprised by someone arriving
Another McMahon template shows him turning toward a screen with a surprised expression. Captions commonly frame it as someone reacting when another person walks in. Know Your Meme traces the footage to WWE in 2001 and its meme use to later online posts. Know Your Meme’s entry on “Vince McMahon Surprised” describes the source and caption format.

This emotional clip comes from the 2020 docuseries Undertaker: The Last Ride, as McMahon discusses The Undertaker. Later posts reuse the footage as a reaction image or video, often to convey sadness or sentiment. The clip’s source is the documentary, rather than the surprise or escalating-excitement footage used in the other McMahon formats. Know Your Meme’s entry on Vince McMahon crying documents the meme use.

8. The Undertaker emerges from a flaming coffin
This image macro shows The Undertaker emerging from a flaming coffin as Randy Orton looks on. Know Your Meme dates the format to around 2018, but does not establish its exact first origin or identify a confirmed creator. Know Your Meme’s entry on The Undertaker entering the arena records that uncertainty. The scene works as a dramatic arrival or an ominous interruption, but its earliest upload is not known.
9. Triple H reacts furiously after Randy Orton’s attack
A furious Triple H reaction image is associated with the storyline in which Randy Orton attacked Stephanie McMahon. Complex includes the image in an editorial list of wrestling memes, but the available account does not establish a definitive meme name or first post. Complex’s list of wrestling memes supplies the wrestling context; it should not be taken as proof of a precise internet origin.
10. The Hell in a Cell fall as a reaction clip
The 1998 Foley fall also circulates as a standalone reaction clip or remix, apart from the “Don’t let this distract you…” copypasta. The source is the same match described above, but the format is different: instead of building to a bait-and-switch, the fall itself serves as a response to something shocking, painful, or wildly excessive. WWE’s oral history of the match documents the event; the later copypasta’s separate history is covered by Know Your Meme.
How to read a wrestling meme’s origin
A useful distinction is between a meme’s source and its template. The source may be a match, a wrestler’s persona, or a documentary scene; the template is the later format people repeat, caption, or remix. The Hell in a Cell copypasta and the standalone Foley fall clip share a source moment but are not the same meme. Cena’s taunt and The Rock’s eyebrow likewise began as parts of wrestling performance before online users gave them new meanings.

When an exact first post or creator is not established—as with the flaming-coffin image, or the Triple H reaction example—it is more accurate to describe the known context than to claim a definitive origin.
