“Overrated” and “underrated” are arguments, not measurable awards. In Matthew Martinez’s August 26, 2026 list, the labels reflect his judgments about characters’ writing, appeal, and place in the culture—not a poll or a settled audience consensus. Here’s the full selection, with the case for each and the places where the ranking invites pushback.
How to read this list
A TV nerd can be valued for different things: advancing a story, carrying an ensemble, delivering comedy, or changing how audiences see a character type. Those measures do not always line up. A character may be culturally influential yet frustrating to watch; another may be beloved within a fandom but less visible outside it.
Martinez does not set out a formal scoring system, so the selections below are best understood as a personal ranking. “Overrated” here can mean irritating, overpraised, or less compelling than a character’s reputation suggests. “Underrated” can mean overlooked beyond a show’s core audience or insufficiently credited for a contribution.
Five TV nerds the article calls underrated
Abby Sciuto (NCIS)
Martinez argues that Abby’s intelligence, humor, and behind-the-scenes work on investigations deserve more recognition. He suggests that the show’s association with an older audience may make her easier to overlook in broader pop-culture conversations. The comparison with Penelope Garcia later in the list also exposes a question of consistency: both are quirky forensic specialists, but Martinez finds Abby’s characterization more successful.

Samwell Tarly (Game of Thrones)
The case for Sam is about character growth as much as bookishness. Martinez emphasizes his status as an outcast and the shift from fear toward standing up for himself. That makes Sam’s appeal less about being the smartest person in a room and more about watching a vulnerable character develop resolve.
Liz Lemon (30 Rock)
Martinez credits Liz as the backbone of her series and argues that 30 Rock should have reached a wider audience. That comparison is his judgment, not an established measure of the show’s popularity. The underlying case is that Liz’s central role and comic perspective merit more recognition than the author believes she receives.
Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)
Martinez sees Rory as intelligent and well performed, while arguing that she receives limited attention outside the show’s fan base. This is a claim about visibility, not a count of audience awareness. The article also discusses the revival and anticipated future episodes, but those statements reflect its August 2026 publication and should not be read as a current update on the franchise.

Chuck Bartowski (Chuck)
Chuck begins in the article’s framing as a computer nerd who becomes a CIA agent. Martinez’s argument is that both the character and the series were overlooked. The appeal is the contrast between an ordinary-seeming tech enthusiast and the high-stakes role he takes on.
Ten TV nerds the article calls overrated
Amy Farrah Fowler (The Big Bang Theory)
Martinez says he considered Sheldon Cooper for this slot before choosing Amy instead, and criticizes both the character and the show. That choice signals the subjective nature of the ranking: the case is not that Amy lacks a role in the series, but that Martinez finds her less deserving of the praise she receives.
Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)
Martinez objects to Leslie’s early behavior as agenda-driven and reads her altruism as a route to career advancement. That is an interpretation of the character’s motives, not an established fact about them. Viewers who see her ambition and public service as compatible will likely reject this entry’s premise.
Rank #3

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
The criticism centers on Willow’s development into a powerful figure, which Martinez finds insufficiently believable. This is a judgment about how convincingly the character’s transformation is written, rather than a dispute that the transformation occurs.
Adrian Monk (Monk)
Martinez finds Monk’s quirks and phobias irritating, even while acknowledging the show’s entertainment value. That reaction is a matter of comic and dramatic taste; it should not be mistaken for a clinical assessment of the character.

Martinez compares Garcia unfavorably with Abby Sciuto, finding Garcia’s quirks less effective. Because both characters occupy quirky forensic roles, the comparison is revealing but subjective: one viewer’s playful characterization may be another’s distraction.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Dwight Schrute (The Office)
The article points to Dwight’s arrogance, rudeness, and efforts to undermine Jim, while acknowledging that he is one of the show’s popular characters. The tension is central to the pick: a character can be popular precisely because of behavior that would make him unpleasant company.
Lisa Simpson (The Simpsons)
Martinez argues that Lisa-focused stories are less interesting than Bart-focused ones, and that her intelligence and saxophone playing are not enough to make her engaging. This is a preference about which character and storylines hold his attention, not a claim that Lisa lacks defining traits.
Vince Masuka (Dexter)
Martinez finds Masuka’s inappropriate dialogue hard to stomach but praises the performance. The distinction matters: the objection is to the character’s material and effect, not to the actor’s execution of it.

Topanga Lawrence (Boy Meets World)
The article criticizes Topanga’s early presentation and what Martinez perceives as controlling behavior later on. Both points are readings of the character across the series, rather than neutral descriptions everyone must accept.
Dana Scully (The X-Files)
Martinez acknowledges Scully’s cultural impact and importance to women in science fiction, yet argues that some praise for her character goes too far. He cites plots that put her in a damsel-in-distress role. This is the list’s clearest tension: a character can be historically significant and still, in one writer’s view, unevenly written or overpraised.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where the ranking is most debatable
- Recognition versus characterization: Calling Scully culturally important does not settle whether every storyline serves her well. The article’s own argument separates influence from execution.
- Similar roles, different verdicts: Praising Abby while criticizing Garcia depends on a personal distinction between how their quirks work, not on an objective category of “good” forensic nerd.
- Popularity versus merit: Dwight can be popular and still irritating; Liz can be central to her show and, in Martinez’s view, under-recognized. The terms measure different things depending on the character.
Informal audience discussion shows the same lack of a single definition. In a recent r/sitcoms discussion, participants offered different answers, including Sheldon Cooper as overrated and Niles from Frasier as underrated. Those responses illustrate disagreement; they are not a representative survey.
