Ten notable Marvel-based films had reached theaters before Disney completed its acquisition of Marvel Entertainment on December 31, 2009. The list includes both Marvel Studios’ first self-produced films and movies made by outside studios under licenses. That distinction matters: Disney acquired Marvel, not a complete pre-existing film library called the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What “before Disney bought Marvel” means
Disney announced its agreement to acquire Marvel on August 31, 2009, but the deal closed on December 31, 2009. This list uses the closing date as its cutoff. The announced transaction was valued at approximately $4 billion, based on the share prices cited in Disney’s acquisition announcement; the completion announcement described Marvel’s library as containing more than 5,000 characters.
“Marvel movies” here means feature films based on Marvel characters released before that cutoff—not only films in the MCU. Marvel’s history included films produced by Marvel Studios and films made by outside studios through licensing arrangements. The ten titles below are a representative selection, not a definitive ranking.
10 notable Marvel movies released before the acquisition closed
| Film | Year | Franchise | Production context |
|---|---|---|---|
| X-Men | 2000 | X-Men | Licensed outside-studio film; Fox’s licensed X-Men films are documented in WIPO’s overview of Marvel character licensing. |
| Spider-Man | 2002 | Spider-Man | Licensed to Columbia Pictures/Sony, as described in WIPO’s licensing overview. |
| Hulk | 2003 | Hulk | Outside-studio film; not one of Marvel’s first two self-produced releases. |
| Spider-Man 2 | 2004 | Spider-Man | Licensed to Columbia Pictures/Sony, as described in WIPO’s licensing overview. |
| Fantastic Four | 2005 | Fantastic Four | Fox licensed film, documented in WIPO’s licensing overview. |
| X-Men: The Last Stand | 2006 | X-Men | Fox licensed film, documented in WIPO’s licensing overview. |
| Spider-Man 3 | 2007 | Spider-Man | Licensed to Columbia Pictures/Sony, as described in WIPO’s licensing overview. |
| Iron Man | 2008 | Iron Man | Marvel Studios’ first self-produced films included this title, according to Marvel’s merger proxy filed with the SEC. |
| The Incredible Hulk | 2008 | Hulk | Marvel Studios’ first self-produced films included this title, according to Marvel’s merger proxy filed with the SEC. |
| X-Men Origins: Wolverine | 2009 | X-Men / Wolverine | Fox licensed film; released before the December 31 acquisition closing. |
Marvel Studios and licensed films are not the same category
Marvel’s first self-produced releases
Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, both released in 2008, were Marvel’s first self-produced films, according to its SEC merger proxy. They are the two entries in this selection identified as Marvel Studios productions.

Films made under character licenses
Several other titles on the list came from arrangements that let outside studios make films using Marvel characters. WIPO describes the Spider-Man film license to Columbia Pictures/Sony and licensed X-Men and Fantastic Four films from Fox in its account of Marvel’s licensing strategy. A Marvel character on screen therefore does not, by itself, establish that Marvel Studios produced the movie or that it belongs to the MCU.
Those distinctions are separate from distribution, ownership of particular film rights, and continuity. Sony’s 2015 announcement of its Marvel collaboration on Spider-Man said Sony would continue to finance, distribute, own, and retain final creative control of Spider-Man films under that arrangement. That later agreement is a reminder that “Marvel movie” does not necessarily mean one company controls every part of a film’s production and release.

Why these ten films make a useful snapshot
The selection shows three phases in a compact timeline: the earlier licensed films that brought Marvel characters to theaters, the continued growth of the Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Hulk screen franchises, and Marvel Studios’ move into self-production with its two 2008 releases. It is a cross-franchise snapshot, not a claim that these are the ten best or most commercially successful Marvel films from the period.
The acquisition joined Disney with Marvel’s characters and entertainment business; it did not retroactively make every pre-2009 Marvel-based film a Marvel Studios production or an MCU entry. Disney’s then-president and CEO Robert A. Iger described the deal as combining Marvel’s brand and character library with Disney’s creative capabilities and entertainment portfolio in the 2009 announcement.
