Spoilers for Season 3, Episode 1, “Costa da Morte.” Daryl and Carol set out from a ruined London hoping to reach America by boat, but a storm destroys their passage and leaves them on Spain’s coast. After Carol is injured and Daryl goes hunting, he returns to find her gone.
What happens in “Costa da Morte”?
The premiere opens with Daryl and Carol traveling through England. In a ruined London, they meet Julian Chamberlain, played by Stephen Merchant, who describes himself as the last Englishman in England. He offers them use of his boat, and the prospect of sailing toward America gives the pair a possible route home.
The plan fails at sea. A storm overturns the boat and kills Julian, leaving Daryl and Carol stranded in Spain instead of reaching Maine. The episode makes the change of destination plain when Carol asks, “Oh s—t, this isn’t Maine, is it?” TVLine’s recap identifies the premiere as “Costa da Morte.”
How does the episode end?
On the Spanish coast, Carol has a piece of metal removed from her shoulder. Daryl and Carol continue on foot, but their immediate situation worsens when Daryl leaves their shelter to hunt. When he returns, Carol is missing. The episode ends on that separation, leaving her whereabouts unresolved.

Why does the London setting matter?
Julian’s claim that he is the only living person in England is presented through his own account, not established as a fact about the whole country. In an interview with GamesRadar+, showrunner David Zabel described the creative appeal of depicting London in ruin: “I love London so much that I thought it would be exciting to see it in its most deteriorated condition, I thought that would be exciting.” Director Dan Percival said the show does not establish what is happening beyond London.
The city gives Julian’s story its setting and atmosphere, but the episode’s central reversal comes later: Daryl and Carol’s effort to get closer to home instead carries them farther away, and then leaves them separated.

AMC’s season premise follows Daryl and Carol as they try to return to their loved ones, with their route taking them through distant places and unfamiliar conditions. The season filmed in Spain, a setting the premiere uses to turn their failed crossing into a new leg of the journey. AMC originally announced the premiere for September 7, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and AMC+; that announcement is historical and does not establish current streaming availability in every market. AMC’s premiere announcement and Season 3 trailer announcement give the official date and season setup.
