The View did not discuss ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in its September 18 or 19, 2025 episodes. The silence lasted two episodes, not indefinitely: on September 22, Whoopi Goldberg said the panel had waited to let Kimmel speak first, then criticized the suspension and discussed free speech and government pressure.
What happened, and when?
- September 17, 2025: ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel’s comments in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s killing. The Los Angeles Times reported that FCC Chair Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel and warned broadcasters before ABC made its decision.
- September 18: The View did not mention the suspension in its discussion segments. Instead, the panel covered its scheduled topics, including a birthday celebration for Sara Haines and other news, as TheWrap and TV Insider reported.
- September 19: The show again did not address Kimmel’s suspension, according to the Los Angeles Times.
- September 22: Goldberg introduced a discussion of the suspension. She explained that the hosts had waited to see whether Kimmel would speak about it first, and said, “No one silences us.” The panel criticized ABC’s action and discussed free speech and government pressure, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
- September 22–23: ABC ended the suspension on September 22 and announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return the following day, according to The Associated Press.
Why did The View wait to discuss it?
Goldberg’s on-air explanation was that the panel “took a breath” to give Kimmel a chance to address the situation himself. That is the reason she gave for the delay; it does not independently establish every panelist’s motive.
On September 22, Goldberg also drew a distinction between a network taking a program off the air and government pressure. She said: “To be clear: You cannot like a show and it can go off the air. Someone can say something they shouldn’t and get taken off the air. But the government cannot apply pressure to force someone to be silenced.” The Los Angeles Times reported the remarks from that broadcast.
Was The View ordered to stay silent?
The available reporting establishes that the program omitted the suspension from two episodes, then discussed it on September 22. It also establishes that Carr had publicly criticized Kimmel and warned broadcasters before ABC suspended the late-night show. That sequence made questions about government pressure relevant, but it does not prove that ABC or Disney instructed The View to remain silent. The sources do not establish the internal reasons behind the panel’s or producers’ decisions.

How broad was the reaction to the suspension?
The Associated Press reported that more than 430 movie, television and stage figures, comedians, directors and writers signed an ACLU open letter urging Americans to defend constitutionally protected rights after the suspension. That count describes signatories to the letter; it is not a measure of public opinion.
