Sunny Hostin: concern about the prosecution
Hostin countered by pointing to what she viewed as political motivation in Hunter Biden’s prosecution. She also invoked Donald Trump’s convictions and pardon-related circumstances as part of her comparison. Those were Hostin’s arguments in the discussion, not independent findings about the motives behind either prosecution.

Ana Navarro: family circumstances and comparable cases
Navarro said she had encouraged Biden to pardon Hunter. She reasoned that people with similar offenses often are not prosecuted and described the decision as a painful family choice for the president. Her view placed the perceived unevenness of prosecution and Biden’s role as a father alongside his public responsibilities.
Whoopi Goldberg: objection to the word “lie”
Goldberg objected when Griffin characterized Biden’s prior assurance as a “lie.” She closed the exchange by questioning why the pardon was what was “freaking people out.” Her response challenged Griffin’s framing and the weight she gave the controversy; it did not erase the disagreement among the panelists.

What Biden had said before changing course
On November 7, 2024, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated the administration’s position when asked whether Biden intended to pardon his son: “We’ve been asked that question multiple times. Our answer stands, which is no.” ABC reported at the time that Hunter Biden had been convicted on federal gun charges and had pleaded guilty to federal tax charges, with sentencing scheduled for December. ABC News reported on the White House position and case context.
Biden signed the pardon on December 1. In his accompanying statement, he said: “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice”. He presented selective and unfair prosecution as his rationale. That is Biden’s explanation for his decision, not an independently established conclusion about the cases. What the pardon covered
The grant was full and unconditional, covering federal offenses Hunter Biden committed or may have committed from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024. It included the offenses charged or prosecuted in the Delaware and California federal cases, but its scope was not limited to those cases or to offenses already charged. The document applies to offenses against the United States within that period; it does not establish that state offenses were also covered. The pardon text sets out the covered dates and offenses.
Why the panel’s arguments differed
The disagreement turned on competing ways to weigh public responsibility and private relationships. Griffin stressed consistency with Biden’s public position and the risk that a pardon could deepen perceptions of a two-tiered justice system. Hostin and Navarro focused on their view that prosecution was uneven or politically driven, while Navarro also foregrounded the family decision. Goldberg disputed Griffin’s word choice and the prominence she gave the controversy.

The arguments also depend on different claims that should not be conflated: Biden’s prior public position is documented, but the panelists’ assertions about how often comparable conduct is prosecuted and whether politics shaped the cases are interpretations. The pardon itself did not resolve those broader questions.

What this account can—and cannot—show
The available coverage supports an attributed account of the main disagreement and selected remarks, rather than a full transcript or a minute-by-minute reconstruction.
