The first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap reveals early that Josh Hartnett’s character is the serial killer police are trying to catch. Rather than save that identity for a final-act twist, the trailer makes the central suspense Cooper’s attempt to escape a police sting at a pop concert with his teenage daughter.
What is the Trap trailer about?
Trap opens with a seemingly ordinary outing: father Cooper Abbott takes his teenage daughter, Riley, to a concert by pop star Lady Raven. The arena is crowded, but police have assembled there to capture a notorious serial killer known as “The Butcher.” The official Warner Bros. Italy synopsis describes a father and daughter realizing they are at the center of a dark event; TheWrap’s April 18, 2024 report identifies the police operation as a hunt for The Butcher.
The trailer’s defining reveal is that Cooper is the person they are hunting. From there, the setup becomes a pressure-cooker thriller: Cooper must navigate the concert and its tightening police presence without exposing himself to his daughter or the authorities.
Does the trailer reveal the twist?
Yes. The trailer identifies Hartnett’s Cooper as The Butcher rather than treating his identity as a secret to be protected until the end. Shyamalan said that reveal happens early in the film and that he did not see a reason to hide it: “When I thought of the idea. I was like, Why? You can’t hide it. It happens so early,” he told TheWrap.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That choice changes the suspense, not the premise. Viewers know what Cooper is trying to conceal, so the tension comes from watching the trap close around him and anticipating how he might get out. Shyamalan described wanting the audience in the protagonist’s point of view as the noose tightens. The trailer therefore sells the film as an escape attempt viewed from the hunted man’s side, rather than as a mystery about who the killer is.

| Josh Hartnett | Cooper Abbott |
| Ariel Donoghue | Riley Abbott |
| Saleka Shyamalan | Lady Raven |
| Hayley Mills | Dr. Josephine Grant |

Saleka Shyamalan, who plays Lady Raven, also wrote new songs for the soundtrack, according to TheWrap. M. Night Shyamalan said he viewed the concert and music as part of the storytelling, citing Prince’s Purple Rain as an important example of bringing performance and narrative together. That is an account of his inspiration, not a claim that the two films are alike in form or story.
Is Trap based on a true story?
No: the film’s concert-night scenario is fictional. Netflix Tudum says it was partially inspired by Operation Flagship, a 1985 sting in the Washington, DC area. In the operation, the U.S. Marshals Service and local police invited fugitives with outstanding warrants to claim supposed football tickets; 101 people were arrested when they arrived, according to Tudum’s account.

Operation Flagship was a different kind of sting from the fictional concert operation in Trap. The connection is inspiration, not a claim that the movie dramatizes an actual event.
