Mr. Crocket is most compelling when it turns the warmth of children’s television into something grotesque: critics have singled out its puppet design, VHS look and gory practical-effects aesthetic. Its story and performances are less dependable, so the film’s appeal rests more on the nightmare it creates than on consistently convincing character drama.
What is Mr. Crocket about?
Set in 1993, Brandon Espy’s horror feature imagines a sinister children’s-TV host who emerges from television sets, abducts children and brutally kills their parents. When Mr. Crocket takes her son, Summer sets out to rescue him. Hulu’s official synopsis presents a VHS copy of the fictional program Mr. Crocket’s World as the gateway into the story.
Espy directed the film and co-wrote it with Carl Reid. The feature expands Espy’s 2022 short of the same name, made for Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween. Hulu’s press page identifies Jerrika Hinton as Summer, Elvis Nolasco as Mr. Crocket, Ayden Gavin as Major, Kristolyn Lloyd as Rhonda and Alex Akpobome as Eddie; Disney+ also lists Akim Black in the cast. Do the practical effects and puppet design work?
They are among the film’s clearest strengths, according to critics. In a review dated October 11, 2024, IGN Movies critic Katie Rife praised the design while identifying a dramatic weakness: “The practical effects and grotesque puppet design are appealing… But inconsistent performances and contradictory characterizations make it difficult to invest in the real-world stakes.” The contrast captures the film’s central trade-off: its central nightmare can be more memorable than the people caught in it.

MovieWeb critic Britt Hayes likewise highlighted the “VHS aesthetic” and “gory practical effects,” while describing the film as a “perfectly passable supernatural parable.” That response suggests the period look and physical grotesquerie can make the film an enjoyable horror watch without making its story exceptional. Both comments are reproduced on Rotten Tomatoes’ Mr. Crocket page; they are critical opinions, not a verified inventory of how the effects were made.
How gory is Mr. Crocket?
Violence is central to the premise, not an incidental element: the story involves brutal killings, and critics describe the effects as gory. Disney+ lists the film as TV-MA, while Apple TV’s US listing includes language and violence advisories. Those labels and advisories are useful signals, but individual tolerance for graphic horror varies.

Is the story as effective as the horror imagery?
Not consistently. The critical reservation is that uneven performances and conflicting characterizations make it harder to care about the real-world stakes. That weakens the emotional side of a rescue story built around a mother’s determination, even as the bizarre children’s-show premise and grotesque imagery give the film a distinct visual identity.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 68% Tomatometer score from 22 reviews in 2026. That figure can change as reviews are added, reflects critics’ reviews rather than audience satisfaction, and does not establish a consensus specifically about the effects.

Where can you watch Mr. Crocket?
At the time of the available listings, the film appeared on Hulu and Disney+. Disney+ lists a runtime of 1 hour 27 minutes and a TV-MA rating; Hulu also labels it TV-MA. Streaming availability and displayed ratings can vary by country and change over time, so check the service in your region. See Hulu’s title listing or Disney+’s listing.
