What happened in Karen Huger’s crash?
Huger crashed in Potomac on March 19, 2024. Reports describe her Maserati crossing a median, striking a street sign or divider and then hitting a tree. She was arrested after the crash. The Washington Post’s trial coverage recounted the crash evidence, while the Los Angeles Times later summarized the arrest.
Was Karen Huger convicted of DUI?
Yes. A Maryland jury found Huger guilty in December 2024 of DUI and other counts. The jury did not convict her of reckless driving, according to Bravo’s verdict report and ABC News.
Evidence and defense arguments at trial
The Washington Post reported that Huger declined an alcohol breath test. Prosecutors presented body-camera footage and officers’ observations, including slurred speech and difficulty standing. Her defense argued that signs visible in the footage could have other explanations, including the crash or seasonal allergies. Those were competing arguments at trial; the jury returned guilty verdicts.

Counts reported after the verdict
ABC News later listed the convictions as DUI, negligent driving, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, and failure to report an address change. The jury did not convict her of reckless driving.
What sentence did the court impose?
On February 26, 2025, the court imposed a two-year term with one year suspended, meaning the reports described one year of incarceration to serve. ABC News reported five years of probation and $2,900 in fines. These are the terms reported for Huger’s case, not a general schedule of DUI penalties.

Additional driving conditions
The Washington Post’s sentencing report said the judge ordered Huger not to drive for one year after release and required an alcohol-reading ignition lock in her car. At sentencing, Judge Terrence McGann said, “All prior warnings had gone in one ear and out the other.”
When was Karen Huger released?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Huger was released on September 2, 2025, after serving six months of the one-year custodial term. In a February 2026 interview with Sherri Shepherd, she discussed grief, alcohol use and treatment. The Times reported her saying, “I was dead wrong,” and, “I’m so grateful no one was killed, no other person was hurt.” These are her statements about her experience.
