Real Steel 2 never reached a confirmed production in the available accounts. Director Shawn Levy said in 2021 that the film was not greenlit or in pre-production; later comments explain that sequel ideas never became a story the team felt ready to make. A separate Disney+ series once reached active development, but the latest located update, from November 2025, is discouraging and does not amount to a formal cancellation notice.
What ever happened to Real Steel 2?
There was sequel talk and the filmmakers considered ideas, but that is different from a completed screenplay, a studio greenlight or a film entering production. In a 2021 interview with Inverse, Levy put the status plainly: “There is no Real Steel 2 currently greenlit or in pre-production somewhere.” That statement describes the project at the time of the interview; it is not a permanent ruling on whether a sequel could ever be made.
In a later oral history published by Yahoo Entertainment, Levy said the team had ideas as they finished the first film, but none felt fully formed or special enough. “We never got to that draft,” he said. Hugh Jackman also discussed why a follow-up did not happen in the oral history. The accounts describe possibilities being considered, not a sequel script moving into production.
Why was there never a sequel to Real Steel?
The story never cleared the creative bar
Levy’s explanation was not simply that the team lacked ideas: they did not find one they believed could justify returning to the story. He framed the challenge as being sure a sequel could top the original. He also said the film was always a father-son movie, even though its marketing emphasized robot fights and invited comparisons with Transformers. The human relationship, rather than the boxing spectacle alone, was central to what the filmmakers wanted to preserve.

The box-office result did not make a sequel an obvious call
In the Yahoo oral history, Levy recalled the film making about $300 million and said that result was not enough to make a sequel a no-brainer. Treat that number as Levy’s retrospective account, not an independently verified box-office total: the publication year for the oral-history page is not established in the available record. His comments point to commercial performance as part of the context, alongside the lack of a sequel story the team considered ready; they do not establish one definitive reason for the decision.
Is the Real Steel Disney+ series still happening?
The proposed series is a separate project from a feature sequel. In 2022, Levy described it as being in active development, which did not mean Disney+ had ordered a season, started filming or set a release date. What’s On Disney Plus reported that development update.

A later update from the same outlet, published November 10, 2025, was discouraging: it reported that Levy’s comments suggested the series was not moving forward. The report does not establish that Disney or 20th Television formally cancelled it. The most precise description is that the series appears stalled according to the latest located report, with no confirmed release plan in these accounts. Read the November 2025 update.
