Season 1 ends with Robert shot and his fate unresolved, while its Norma reveal exposes an identity theft at the heart of Palm Beach society. Season 2 brings Maxine and Robert together and gives several women new beginnings—but leaves a few story threads open. Creator Abe Sylvia described that finale as “a win, but with a question mark.” The series was later canceled after two seasons, so those open threads did not lead to a third season.
What happened in the Season 1 finale?
In “Maxine Throws a Party,” the Beach Ball brings the season’s personal scandals and public danger together. Robert’s investigation uncovers that the woman everyone knows as Norma is actually Agnes, her diabetic boarding-school roommate. After the real Norma died, Agnes assumed her identity and inheritance.

At the same event, Mary tries to assassinate President Nixon. Linda intervenes, redirecting the bullet into Robert. The finale does not reveal whether he survives. Sylvia called the shooting a deliberate cliffhanger and a “wink” to Sara Jane Moore’s 1975 attempt on President Gerald Ford, transposed to Nixon and Palm Beach. He framed the violence as the outside world breaking into the town’s insulated social bubble. TheWrap’s May 7, 2024 interview with Sylvia and Ricky Martin discusses the ending.
Was Norma really Agnes?
Yes. The apparent Norma’s identity is Agnes’s: she took the dead girl’s name and inheritance. The reveal complicates the suspicion raised in Season 2 that Norma may have murdered her family; it does not make that suspicion a settled account of her past.
#1 Best Overall
Sylvia described Palm Beach as “a town of imposters” and called the woman running it “the biggest imposter of all.” He also linked Maxine’s social-climbing to her attempt to earn love and worthiness through an identity that “doesn’t actually exist at all.” Those are the creator’s framing of the reveal and Maxine’s arc, rather than a definitive explanation of every character’s motives.
What happened to Robert after he was shot?
At the end of Season 1, his survival is intentionally unanswered. Sylvia said the most authentic and decent person would pay the biggest price when violence arrives. Season 2 later establishes that Robert survives: he marries Maxine in its finale.
What does the Season 2 wedding ending mean?
Season 2’s finale, “Maxine Does Something Good,” closes with Maxine and Robert married and the Dellacorte trust unlocked. Norma sings “Something Good”; Sylvia said he selected it for its meaning and for Burnett’s connection to Julie Andrews, who sang it in The Sound of Music. Norma accepts her adopted son’s sexuality and later reunites with Linda in Paris. Maxine and Evelyn reopen the Palm Royale, and other women also receive favorable turns.
Sylvia said, “We wanted to leave people on a win, but with a question mark.” The wedding and reconciliations make the ending more conclusive than Season 1’s cliffhanger, but remaining adversaries and a mysterious call to Rafi leave possible threads. Sylvia discussed where a Season 3 story might go; those possibilities were not confirmation that Apple had approved another season. TheWrap’s January 14, 2026 interview covers his explanation.
Why did Maxine choose Robert over Douglas?
The finale’s outcome is clear: Maxine marries Robert. The available creator comments explain the ending’s tone and themes, but do not establish a single definitive statement from Sylvia about why she chose Robert over Douglas. The marriage resolves the romantic choice onscreen; a more specific account of her private reasoning would go beyond what those comments confirm.
How do the two finales differ?
| Finale | Main threat | Resolution | Sylvia’s framing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1, “Maxine Throws a Party” | Political violence and secrets about identity | Robert is shot; his immediate fate is left unresolved | A deliberate, “delicious cliffhanger” |
| Season 2, “Maxine Does Something Good” | Family and status secrets, with unresolved story threads | Maxine and Robert marry; the trust is unlocked and several relationships improve | “A win, but with a question mark” |
The contrast matches the show’s broader setting. Apple describes Palm Royale as an underdog story set in 1969, following Maxine Simmons as she tries to cross the line between the haves and have-nots and enter Palm Beach high society. Apple’s official series page gives that premise and lists Season 2’s release date as November 12, 2025; its Episode 10 finale is dated January 14, 2026.

Sylvia said Season 2 deliberately explored sisterhood among ambitious women in the tighter social “container” of 1969. In a January 16, 2026 interview, he also recalled hearing stories during research about wives committed to institutions by husbands for having feelings. That context connects the women’s bonds and constraints to the era’s gendered power, without making any single character a stand-in for every historical woman. Louisville Public Media’s interview with Sylvia discusses his approach.
His comments clarify intent, but viewers can read the ending’s sisterhood and power dynamics in their own way. The show’s source novel is also not a key to solving the TV finale: Palm Royale is loosely adapted from Juliet McDaniel’s 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, according to Variety.
Is Palm Royale coming back for Season 3?
No. Sylvia discussed possible directions for a third season before Apple’s decision was reported. On March 2, 2026, TheWrap reported that sources with direct knowledge said the series had ended with Season 2; Variety confirmed on March 3 that Apple TV canceled it after two seasons. The Rafi call and other open threads therefore remain teases, not evidence of a forthcoming season. See TheWrap’s March 2 cancellation report and Variety’s March 3 confirmation.
