That is Charles’s end-of-episode interpretation, not a solved answer. The hour leaves the killer and motive unresolved while directing the investigation toward the Arconia’s West Tower.
What happens in “Gates of Heaven”?
Written by Kristin Newman, Season 4, Episode 2 follows the trio as they try to understand Sazz Pataki’s death. The episode is framed by archival interview footage of Sazz from a Brazzos documentary. She describes stunt work as stepping in for an actor and recalls learning the craft from her father. Her job as Charles’s double becomes more than background: it makes mistaken identity a plausible part of the murder mystery.
Charles is overwhelmed by grief and fixates on the ashes left on his hands. He cannot bring himself to wash them away, so Mabel and Oliver help him collect the ash-bearing water. The scene balances painful loss with the show’s characteristic dark humor.
Why does the investigation move to the West Tower?
Mabel and Oliver examine the bullet hole in Charles’s kitchen window and look across toward the Arconia’s West Tower. Oliver initially thinks the shooter meant to kill Charles. Charles, meanwhile, points them to Sazz’s notes, which contain the phrases “West Tower Arconia,” “Long Game,” “Sick Pup,” “Dudenoff,” “Looking at Charles” and “773440.” The notes suggest multiple lines of inquiry; the episode does not explain them all.

Charles orders luminol and tries to reconstruct what happened, imagining conversations with Sazz along the way. Mabel and Oliver investigate without him because they fear he may still be in danger. Their inquiries bring them face to face with West Tower residents, including Vince Fish, nicknamed Stink-Eye Joe, and the Sauce Family. They also learn about a closed apartment associated with Dudenoff and discover that the tower’s windows are painted shut. The residents’ guarded behavior makes the apartment and its occupants part of the mystery, but it does not establish who is responsible for Sazz’s death.
Was Sazz the real target?
The episode’s final turn suggests the opposite: Charles may have been the intended target, with Sazz struck in his place. The shot comes through Charles’s apartment window while he is absent, and Sazz’s work as his stunt double makes the possibility of mistaken identity credible. After using luminol on the kitchen floor and considering the blood evidence alongside Sazz’s notes, Charles interprets what he has found as evidence that the attack was aimed at him.

That is a cliffhanger theory, not the season’s final solution. The episode establishes that Sazz is dead, that a shot entered Charles’s apartment, and that the West Tower is under investigation. It does not name the shooter or conclusively explain the motive.
What does Jan’s return mean?
Charles hears a noise and finds Jan in his apartment, emerging from his closet in a bloodied prison-guard uniform. Authorities later arrive looking for the escaped convict. Jan’s return adds a separate danger to the episode; it does not solve Sazz’s murder. She is also grieving Sazz, her girlfriend.

Those details deepen the season’s setup without identifying the killer in this episode.

Charles’s imagined conversations with Sazz give his grief and guilt a visible presence. Hoffman told TVLine that the season’s reflection theme runs through film, scripts and actors portraying other people, and described its emotional center as “a murder mystery about what happened to this ultimate doppelgänger [Sazz], and reflecting on the depth of that friendship….” Hoffman also said that keeping Sazz meaningfully present in the season felt right for Charles. The archival documentary footage and Charles’s visions make her absence central even when she is not physically there.

Where can you hear more about the episode?
The Only Murders in the Building Official Podcast has a companion installment titled “S4 E2: Gates of Heaven (Part 1),” featuring writer Kristin Newman and discussion of the West Tower and Sazz’s casting. It is supplementary conversation, rather than a substitute for the episode. TheWrap reported in August 2024 that new Season 4 episodes were then released on Tuesdays on Hulu; that historical schedule does not establish current availability in every country.
