Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is a political action thriller about a father trying to find his missing daughter—and a comedy whose restless energy keeps testing how seriously we can take its politics. The collision mostly works: the chase gives political fear speed and shape, while Bob and Willa’s strained bond gives the film’s generational conflict a personal cost. Its volatility can also make grave subjects feel like part of the spectacle. Whether that tension feels bracing or distracting will depend on how much tonal whiplash you welcome.

What is One Battle After Another about?

Paul Thomas Anderson wrote, directed, and produced the film. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Bob, a washed-up revolutionary living off-grid with his daughter, Willa, played by Chase Infiniti. When Bob’s nemesis, played by Sean Penn, resurfaces after 16 years and Willa goes missing, Bob sets out to find her and confront the consequences of his past. Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor are also in the ensemble; Jonny Greenwood composed the score. Warner Bros.’ official film site provides the synopsis and credits.

That premise makes the film’s two scales inseparable. Bob’s search is a concrete, urgent problem; the history that catches up with him opens onto a longer story about political struggle, its failures, and the people who inherit its consequences. The question is not simply whether the revolutionaries were right, but what their battles have left for the next generation.

Does the resistance story give the film political weight?

The film treats resistance as something that persists, mutates, and passes between generations rather than as a finished chapter. BFI’s Sight and Sound review frames it as a political action thriller whose concerns include the reprise of old struggles and the hand-off of battles. Nick Bradshaw’s review for BFI also cautions, in effect, against reducing the film to its topical politics: its pleasures and interests are wider than a single political argument.

#1 Best Overall

The Guardian reads the film through counterculture, counter-revolution, contemporary political paranoia, immigration enforcement, and the dysfunction between father and daughter. Those are critical interpretations, not a substitute for the story itself or proof of a single intended allegory. They help explain the film’s charge, but its politics are most affecting when they register through people’s lived relationships and the inheritance of past choices—not when every event is treated as a direct cipher for current affairs. Peter Bradshaw’s Guardian review develops that reading.

The risk is that momentum can turn political fear into an exciting surface. Anderson’s comedy and action make the world vivid and unstable, but the same exuberance can keep the viewer at a distance from the people most exposed to its violence. The film’s resistance story has weight when its absurdity sharpens the sense of danger; it is less persuasive when the spectacle threatens to become its own reward.

Does the father-daughter story hold the politics together?

Bob’s search gives the film a human through-line amid its larger political currents. Willa is not merely a reason for him to move from one set piece to the next: her absence forces the old revolutionary to confront the consequences of the life and history he has handed down. That makes the family story a meaningful counterweight to political scale, even as the relationship remains entangled with the film’s comic, volatile tone.

Anderson identified family as a central question in Warner Bros.-provided press information: “For this film that is really two things: Can this father find his daughter, and what does it mean to be a family?” The question is more useful than treating Bob as a straightforward hero. His past may define the danger around Willa, but the search also asks what responsibility looks like when a parent’s convictions and choices have shaped a child’s world.

How do the action, comedy, and craft work together?

The film shifts among political indignation, pulpy comic-book energy, screwball farce, and rapid chase-driven action. Rather than settling into a single register, it keeps jolting between them. At its best, humor makes the surrounding paranoia feel more unnerving, and the action gives abstract conflict an immediate physical rhythm. At its most unstable, the tonal swings risk making political stakes feel like just another ingredient in the entertainment.

One Battle After Another [Blu-ray][2025]
  • From Warner Bros. Pictures comes “One Battle After Another,” written, directed and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Academy Award and BAFTA winners Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro, and Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti.

Greenwood’s score is part of that propulsion, while the film’s action and image scale are built for theatrical presentation. BFI emphasizes the chase-driven momentum; Warner Bros. lists VistaVision, 70mm, and IMAX theatrical formats. Those formats speak to the intended scale, not a claim that every viewer will see the film in a particular presentation. The official site also lists 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats.

Is it based on Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland?

Yes, but it is a free reworking, not a literal screen transfer. BFI and The Guardian identify Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland as the source; BFI describes the movie as reworked from the book, while the Guardian characterizes Anderson’s approach as giving himself freer rein. Anderson said he had been developing an action car-chase idea and had also considered adapting the novel before bringing together the elements that resonated with him.

“I started working on this story 20 years ago with the goal of writing an action car-chase movie, and I returned to it every two or three years,” Anderson said in Warner Bros.-provided press information. That account helps explain why the film feels like more than an attempt to reproduce a novel: its political inheritance, family search, and chase-driven design are brought together as Anderson’s own adaptation.

Is One Battle After Another worth watching?

It is a strong choice for viewers who want politically charged action with comic disorder, shifting tones, and a family story beneath the spectacle. Its most distinctive achievement is making old struggles feel both absurdly persistent and personally consequential. Viewers seeking a steady, solemn political drama may find its farce and kinetic set pieces undercut the gravity they want; those willing to let comedy and danger rub against each other are more likely to find the tension productive.

Where can you watch it?

Warner Bros.’ official site lists a U.S. theatrical date of September 26, 2025, and an international theatrical release beginning September 24, 2025. It lists 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD home-video formats as well. Current availability varies by territory and over time, so check the official site and local listings for the latest options.
