Donkey Kong Bananza turns destruction into the foundation of its adventure, not just a visual flourish. It is a Nintendo Switch 2 game built around smashing through a layered underground world, finding hidden rewards and teaming up with Pauline. The result is a lively showcase for the system, though the story is lighter than the play and reviewers have noted occasional camera and performance friction.
What is Donkey Kong Bananza?
Donkey Kong Bananza is an action-adventure game for Nintendo Switch 2, released July 17, 2025. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop and handheld play, with one or two players on a single system. It is not listed as an original Nintendo Switch title. Nintendo’s physical-game listing identifies SKU 121485. How destruction drives the adventure
The central pleasure is the way smashing changes how you move through the world. Donkey Kong can break apart terrain, opening routes and exposing things worth collecting. Destruction therefore works as navigation and exploration as much as spectacle: the player is encouraged to look at the environment as something to investigate and reshape.
Pauline is more than a story companion. Nintendo says her singing enables Bananza transformations that give Donkey Kong special abilities. Those transformations add another layer to the physical play, while the changing terrain and hidden finds keep exploration at the center. Nintendo outlines the feature in its game features listing; TechRadar and GamesRadar+ likewise highlight destruction, secrets and companion play in their reviews.

Does the story match the gameplay?
Not quite. The game’s strongest ideas are in its tactile world and the freedom to break through it, rather than in a complex narrative. TechRadar’s July 2025 review described the plot as basic and somewhat rushed. That is a reviewer’s judgment, but it points to a genuine trade-off for players who want the story to carry as much weight as the mechanics.
TechRadar Gaming Editor Dashiell Wood called it “the greatest Nintendo Switch 2 title to date” in his July 2025 review verdict, praising the destruction system as a showcase for the new system. That is Wood’s assessment, not a consensus ranking. The more durable case for the game is its unusually direct link between breaking the world and discovering what it contains.

Camera and performance caveats
GamesRadar+ praised the game while reporting that the camera can struggle in underground areas and that performance can dip during busy sequences, particularly boss battles. These are occasional observations from a reviewer, not a universal defect or an independently measured performance result. Nintendo’s update history records ongoing changes, including a camera auto-follow toggle in an earlier update, but does not establish that a particular update resolved those review observations.
What is included, and what costs extra?
The main game is the destructive exploration adventure. Nintendo sells DK Island & Emerald Rush separately as paid DLC. It adds a modern take on DK’s home island and timed, repeatable challenges that become more difficult and award in-game rewards. Emerald Rush is most relevant if you finish the main adventure and want repeatable challenges. It is not required to experience the base game’s central destruction-and-exploration loop.
Is amiibo required?
No. Nintendo says the Donkey Kong & Pauline amiibo grants Pauline’s Diva Dress outfit early; the figure is sold separately. Other compatible amiibo can provide gold KONG tiles or material. How can you play with someone else?
One or two players can play on one system. Nintendo also lists online GameShare, but it has separate requirements: Nintendo Switch 2, GameChat, internet access, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. GameShare is not available in every country, so check Nintendo’s regional listing before relying on it. The physical listing identifies TV, tabletop and handheld modes alongside the local player count.
Verdict
Donkey Kong Bananza is an inventive Switch 2 adventure whose best idea is also its organizing principle: break through the environment to move, explore and uncover rewards. Its modest story and the camera and performance issues reported by reviewers keep it from being an unqualified technical showcase, but they do not erase the appeal of its distinctive play. The base game is the choice for the main adventure; the separately sold DLC is for players who want more challenges afterward.
