Sasha Colby introduced Chappell Roan as her “daughter” at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards because Roan had become her honorary drag daughter—a playful drag-family bond, not a biological relationship. Before Roan performed “Good Luck, Babe!” on September 11, 2024, Colby called her “Your favourite drag queen’s favourite artist, my daughter, Chappell Roan!”
What Sasha Colby said before Chappell Roan performed
Colby introduced Roan with the line: “Your favourite drag queen’s favourite artist, my daughter, Chappell Roan!” PinkNews reported the wording. The introduction preceded Roan’s performance of “Good Luck, Babe!” at the September 11, 2024 VMAs; MTV’s archive lists the performance and date: MTV’s VMAs archive.
Why Colby called Roan her daughter
In drag culture, a drag mother or daughter can describe a chosen, mentor-like relationship rather than a biological one. Colby said she and Roan met in Seattle and that she made Roan her daughter when they met. Recalling their exchange, Colby said: “She was like: ‘I would love to be a Colby,’ and I was like: ‘You give Colby energy, for sure.’” PinkNews reported the story after the pair performed together at Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party in July 2024. PinkNews’ account of Colby and Roan’s drag-family connection describes Roan as an honorary Colby.
Harper’s Bazaar also reported that Colby told Roan she had “daughter energy” when they met in Seattle, and later introduced her at the VMAs. Harper’s Bazaar’s November 1, 2024 interview with Roan places the introduction in that context.

The introduction echoed a phrase both artists had made their own
Colby’s wording played on her Drag Race-era phrase, “your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen.” Roan had adapted the idea into “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.” Calling Roan “your favourite drag queen’s favourite artist” joined the two phrases in one introduction, before Colby added the personal “my daughter.” PinkNews and Harper’s Bazaar both discuss the phrase connection.
Roan’s performance and award at the 2024 VMAs
Roan performed “Good Luck, Babe!” in a medieval-inspired staging. TIME reported that she wore a full suit of armor and performed alongside knights and pyrotechnics. Later in the ceremony, she won Best New Artist. In her acceptance speech, she addressed LGBTQIA+ viewers, saying: “And for all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now: I see you, I understand you, because I am one of you.” TIME’s September 12, 2024 VMA recap covers the performance and award.
