Reggie’s payoff in Bad Boys: Ride or Die turns a running joke from Bad Boys II into a moment of trust: the young man Mike and Marcus once intimidated becomes the person protecting their family when they cannot step in themselves. Actor Dennis McDonald said the sequence took three months of preparation, and that the film’s final grill moment was added after he had already gone home.

How Reggie’s story comes full circle

When Reggie first appeared in Bad Boys II, he was asking Marcus Burnett’s daughter out. Mike Lowrey and Marcus responded by questioning and intimidating the young man before the date. The scene made Reggie the butt of the joke—and gave the franchise a small character moment it could revisit years later.

By Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Reggie is Marcus’s son-in-law and, as Entertainment Weekly describes him, a Marine staff sergeant. When armed attackers break into the Burnett home, he acts to protect Marcus’s wife, daughter, and grandson. Mike and Marcus watch through video feeds, leaving Reggie to face the danger while the two leads are unable to intervene.

The reversal gives the scene its emotional force. Reggie is no longer the nervous young man being assessed by the family’s protectors; he is the one protecting the family. The sequence also turns the earlier intimidation into a setup for the character’s acceptance and respect. Entertainment Weekly’s interview with McDonald discusses the scene and his long association with the role.

The filmmakers planned a payoff to the 2003 scene

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have described the home-defense sequence as a deliberate echo of Reggie’s first appearance. El Arbi framed the creative question this way: “Okay, 20 years later, how are we going to do the greatest, coolest payoff to that one scene in 2003?” Fallah called the new sequence “the ultimate” Reggie moment and said he had seen the Bad Boys II scene many times.

The directors’ aim was not simply to bring back a familiar face. The old scene established Reggie as an outsider being tested; the new one lets him demonstrate who he has become. The contrast makes his place in the Burnett family feel earned rather than just announced. The Hollywood Reporter’s interview with the directors, hosted by Yahoo, records their comments on building that payoff.

McDonald trained for the home-invasion sequence

McDonald told Entertainment Weekly he trained for three months to prepare for the action, which was filmed over three days. He also recalled special-effects blood getting into his eye while he continued performing. That detail is his account of the shoot, not evidence of a reported injury.

The preparation matters to the scene’s change in emphasis: Reggie has to read as capable enough to defend the home, while the family’s fear and Mike and Marcus’s helplessness remain visible. In a separate interview, McDonald described the responsibility of saving the family and Reggie’s growth into someone welcomed as one of them. Global Grind’s interview captures his perspective on that shift.

The closing grill moment was not in the original script

Reggie’s story gets a lighter final beat after the action. McDonald said the grill moment was not in the original script: “That wasn’t in the script at all.” He had returned home after filming when he was called back to Miami several days later. He said he did not know he would be shooting the film’s final moment.

That ending gives the character a different kind of recognition from the home-defense sequence. The action establishes Reggie’s competence; the closing moment lets him occupy a relaxed, familiar place in the family. McDonald also described finally seeing Reggie receive his due as “a blessing.” In Entertainment Weekly’s account, he said people had called him Reggie since 2003: “My name is Reggie.”

Where Reggie’s redemption lands

Reggie’s arc is compact but satisfying because Ride or Die builds directly on what the earlier film made him: a young man facing the disapproval of Marcus and Mike. Two decades later, he is trusted with the people they love most. McDonald’s account of the training and the added final scene shows how the film extended that payoff beyond the action itself.
