Spoilers for Bad Monkey Season 1, Episode 4. Eve Stripling is the strongest answer to the episode’s villain question: she helps drive the fraud and presses Nick toward violence. But Nick is the one who carries out the killings, so Eve’s influence does not absolve him. The flashback also complicates the contrast with Andrew Yancy, whose own choices are far from spotless.

What happens in ‘Nothing’s Wrong With It, I Just Don’t Need It Anymore’?

Episode 4 shifts back roughly five years to explain how Nick and Eve’s relationship began and how the present-day deception took shape. It is an origin story as much as a continuation of the investigation: the flashback reveals that “Christopher” is Nick and shows how his apparent death was staged.

Nick and Eve’s origin

Nick, then a single father, meets aspiring actress Eve at a Miami club event. They fall in love and marry, although Nick’s daughter, Caitlin, distrusts Eve. Nick later brings Eve into the medical-insurance scam he runs with Israel “Izzy” O’Peele. The fraud helps finance Eve’s ambition to develop a resort in the Bahamas, but expanding the operation brings federal scrutiny.

How Nick disappears

With the scam at risk of exposure, Nick and Eve fake his death. The episode explains the earlier reveal that “Christopher” is Nick: the deception involves a severed arm and a staged fishing discovery. The cover-up links the flashback to the violence unfolding in the present.

Yancy’s past in Miami

In a parallel flashback, Yancy is still a Miami police officer. He exposes colleague Mendez’s misuse of the crime-tip system, but Yancy’s own conduct and attitude lead to his reassignment to the Florida Keys. There, he meets Bonnie and learns about her abusive husband, Cliff. Yancy pushes Cliff into the sea—an act rooted in a protective impulse, but one that complicates his standing as a moral counterweight to Nick and Eve.

Who is the real villain: Eve or Nick?

The answer depends on what “villain” means. Eve is the clearest driver of the scheme’s ruthless direction: her ambition and response to threats help push events toward murder. Nick, however, is directly responsible for carrying out the killings. The episode draws a useful distinction between influence and action rather than treating one character’s pressure as an excuse for the other’s violence.

Question What the episode suggests
Who helps initiate and pressure the scheme? Eve joins Nick and Izzy’s fraud and helps shape the response when it is threatened.
Who directly commits the killings? Nick.
Who complicates the apparent moral contrast? Yancy, whose past includes pushing Cliff into the sea.

So Eve is the strongest answer if the question is who is driving the danger. Nick remains culpable for what he does, while Yancy’s flashback prevents the story from offering a completely clean hero as a comparison.

Why the flashback changes the story

Before this episode, “Christopher” and Nick’s apparent death leave a gap in the story. The flashback fills it in: Nick’s assumed death is part of a deliberate cover-up tied to the insurance fraud, not a separate mystery. It also changes how the present-day killings read. They are connected to the effort to protect the scheme and the story built around Nick’s disappearance.
