Released on February 10, 2025, it revisits the U.S. raid and ensuing rescue operation through interviews with American troops and Somali residents, including people who fought, lived through the battle, and documented it. The series widens a story many viewers know through the feature film, but it is a documentary account—not a substitute for a full history of the conflict.
What is the new Netflix Black Hawk Down docuseries called?
The series is Surviving Black Hawk Down, a limited documentary series released on Netflix on February 10, 2025. Netflix says it was directed by Jack MacInnes and produced by Ridley Scott Associates. It combines first-person interviews, reenactments, and footage recorded before, during, and after the battle. Netflix Tudum’s series announcement describes its production and approach.
Netflix lists three episodes:
| Episode | Runtime | Focus in Netflix’s description |
|---|---|---|
| “This Is Not New York” | 53 minutes | Somalia’s famine and civil-war context, and the mission that set the battle in motion |
| “A Wall of Lead” | 47 minutes | The fighting and Somali counterfire after U.S. forces enter Mogadishu |
| “No Way Out” | 56 minutes | The rescue effort and the captive pilot |
The episode titles and runtimes appear on Netflix’s series page. Netflix’s release-date guide gives February 10, 2025, as the premiere date.
What happened in the Battle of Mogadishu?
The battle grew out of a wider crisis in Somalia, where political unrest and civil war were compounded by famine in 1992. UN peacekeepers arrived, and relations between U.S. forces and Somalis deteriorated as coalition forces targeted Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Netflix’s account places the events within that context, rather than treating the helicopter losses as an isolated incident.

On October 3, 1993, a U.S. task force launched a raid in Mogadishu to capture two of Aidid’s lieutenants. Somali militia fire brought down two Black Hawk helicopters during the operation. Attempts to recover the crews turned the planned strike into a rescue mission, and the fighting continued beyond the initial raid. Netflix Tudum summarizes that specific operation and its aftermath in its overview of the series.
Netflix’s series page describes three Black Hawk helicopters being downed across its account of the battle. That series-level description should not be confused with Tudum’s account of the two helicopters brought down during the specific October 3 raid. The distinction matters: a broad description of the series’ historical subject and the number associated with a particular operation are not necessarily the same claim.

Whose experiences does the documentary include?
Netflix says the series includes Army Rangers and Delta Force members who worked together during the operation, as well as people from Mogadishu. Its Somali participants include militiamen who fought U.S. forces, women caught in the war zone, and a photographer who recorded the conflict. Netflix Media Center describes the interviews as coming from both sides. Netflix Media Center’s series entry outlines that approach.
TIME’s reporting adds specific civilian memories. Halima recalled sheltering with children at a nearby school during the raid. Binti Adan described how her daughter Ifrah lost her eyesight after injuries sustained during the siege. These are recollections reported by TIME, not an independent clinical account of Ifrah’s injuries. TIME also profiled Ahmed “Five,” a Somali party photographer who began documenting the turmoil. He explained his motivation simply: “The situation needed to be recorded.” TIME’s report on the series gives these accounts.

Those perspectives change the scale of the story. The familiar American military narrative is still present, but the series also makes space for Somali fighters, residents, and witnesses whose lives were caught up in the battle. That does not make a three-episode documentary a complete account of Somalia’s civil war; it does make the screen story less exclusively centered on U.S. forces.
How is the documentary different from the Black Hawk Down movie and book?
Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down is a dramatized feature film adapted from Mark Bowden’s 1999 book, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War. Netflix’s Tudum identifies that book-film connection in its series overview. The Netflix series takes a different form: interviews, reenactments, and footage rather than a single dramatic feature built around a scripted narrative.

| Work | Form | Perspective and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Black Hawk Down (film) | Dramatized feature film directed by Ridley Scott | Adaptation of Bowden’s book; a feature-film account of the battle |
| Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War (1999) | Reported book by Mark Bowden | The source book identified by Netflix as the basis for the film |
| Surviving Black Hawk Down (2025) | Three-part documentary with interviews, reenactments, and footage | Includes U.S. service members and Somali fighters, civilians, and a photographer |
The clearest difference is whose testimony appears onscreen: Netflix’s stated approach includes Somali accounts alongside those of U.S. troops. Its use of firsthand recollection also brings civilian experience into a story commonly encountered through military action and the rescue effort. For readers who want a longer treatment of the event, Bowden’s book is a related source; the documentary and the book are different forms, not interchangeable records.

Casualty figures should be read with their source and uncertainty attached. TIME’s 2025 retrospective reports that at least 18 Americans died over four days and gives an estimated 200 Somali deaths. TIME says the Somali death count was never finalized; that estimate is not a settled total or a newly verified official count. The figures come from TIME’s reporting on the series and should not be presented as directly comparable tallies. TIME’s retrospective provides the attribution and qualification.
