Alysa Liu did not win Olympic gold by trading athletic excellence for personal style. At Milano Cortina 2026, she delivered a technically demanding free skate—and did it on terms she has described as her own. Her gold-medal performance, self-directed look and emphasis on joy offer a grounded way to understand what “Gen Z-ified” figure skating can mean: not a proven generational trend, but a champion making room for a more personal kind of visibility.
What Liu’s Olympic win changed about the conversation
On February 19, 2026, Liu won the women’s singles gold medal at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The International Skating Union (ISU) said she became the first U.S. woman to win the event since 2002. Her result brought a wider audience to a story that was about more than the medal: an athlete who had stepped away from competition and later returned because she wanted to skate.
Calling that story “Gen Z-ified” is an interpretation, not an official label or a measured claim about all young viewers. It describes the contrast between the sport’s familiar image of carefully managed presentation and Liu’s emphasis on self-expression, agency and enjoyment. Her visibility resonated with some alternative, punk and emo audiences, the Associated Press (AP) reported; that is evidence of a particular response, not proof that every young person relates to her in the same way. AP on Liu’s style and cultural reception.
Her free skate put the sport first, too
Liu’s Olympic performance was not a statement of style in place of sporting achievement. She skated to Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park Suite.” The ISU described seven triple jumps, difficult spins and footwork, and a crowd that responded before the program had finished. The technical content and her entertaining performance belonged together: the result was a gold-medal skate, not simply a viral look. ISU’s report on the Olympic result and free skate.

Why Liu left skating—and why she returned
Before retirement: a life reduced to training
Liu finished sixth at the 2022 Beijing Olympics at age 16 and then retired from competitive skating. In an AP interview, she recalled, “I really had nothing going on with my life, you know? Just training.” The remark gives context to her decision: she was stepping away from a demanding routine, not rejecting skating as an art or sport. AP on Liu’s retirement and return.
Time away made a return possible
After leaving competition, Liu attended UCLA, traveled and explored life beyond skating. AP reported that skiing—and the adrenaline it brought—helped her consider skating again. U.S. Figure Skating describes her return for the 2024–25 season; she went on to win the 2025 World Championships and Grand Prix Final before taking Olympic gold. The sequence matters. Her comeback followed a period away from the sport, rather than a straight continuation of the childhood training she had left. She has framed her motivation in terms of personal enjoyment: U.S. Figure Skating quoted her saying, “I’m only here because I like it,” and “It would be a problem if I didn’t have joy.” Those words do not erase the work required to reach the Olympic podium; they describe the terms on which she wanted to do that work.
Agency extended to music, costume and appearance
Liu’s presentation was not just a haircut or a piercing. In a first-person interview published by Nike, she said that when she returned, people told her she would have to change her hair. Her answer: “No, I won’t be changing my hair.” She also said, “I get the final say for everything — my programs, my music, the dress, the hair, the makeup.” Because this is a brand-published interview, it is best read as Liu’s own account of her choices, not as an independent report on how every decision in elite skating is made. AP described Liu’s hair as blond-and-brunette stripes and reported that she intended the stripes to represent tree-growth rings, adding a ring over time. The same report noted her frenulum piercing and the response among some alt, punk and emo audiences. These details help explain why her appearance caught attention, but the fuller point is that Liu has described having a say over how she appears and performs.
That sense of control also comes through in her account of her earlier life. AP quoted Liu saying, “I used to feel like a puppet or a canvas that other people were using. Now I do things for myself.” U.S. Figure Skating quoted her saying, “I validate myself, and I can completely do that alone.” Together, those statements connect her visual choices to a broader idea: a skater’s identity need not be treated as something other people get to define for her.

What “Gen Z-ified” gets right—and what it does not prove
The phrase works as shorthand for several documented features of Liu’s story, but it should not be mistaken for a claim that she single-handedly changed figure skating or that the sport now represents every young person’s tastes. There is no audience survey or quantified measure establishing a generational effect. What can be said more precisely is that Liu paired elite competition with visible self-expression and publicly described skating as something she chose for herself.
- It points to agency: Liu has said she had the final say over creative and presentation choices.
- It recognizes a specific audience response: AP reported that her look made her a hero to some alternative, punk and emo audiences.
- It does not diminish the sport: her Olympic gold came with the demanding jumps, spins and footwork described by the ISU.
- It is not proof of a universal shift: one athlete’s impact and reported reception do not establish how all skaters or viewers feel.
Liu’s example broadens the image of who a figure-skating champion can be without requiring a choice between individuality and excellence. The achievement was hers; so, by her account, were the reasons and creative choices that brought her back to the ice.
