They chose the date because it marked one year since Montgomery asked Grace to be her girlfriend. With a hallway aisle, a Zoom officiant and Grace’s son in several wedding-party roles, the improvised ceremony felt deeply personal—and, Montgomery later said, no less moving than an in-person wedding.
Why Renee Montgomery and Sirena Grace married at home
The couple’s relationship began at an Atlanta Hawks game in March 2019, where Grace had been invited to sing the national anthem. They connected after the game, Grace recalled in an INTO interview. Montgomery asked Grace to be her girlfriend on April 20, 2019, and proposed during a trip to France on November 21 that year, according to the couple’s later account in a People interview syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment.
Their planned wedding was disrupted amid the pandemic. On the morning of April 20, 2020, they reconsidered whether to wait or marry that day. Grace recalled that the decision came together quickly: “We literally just woke up that morning and said, ‘Oh, it’s April 20. We’re not going to get married.’ And then we’re like, ‘Well, do you still want to do it? We could probably do it. Let’s just try.’ So it just happened like that, there wasn’t a lot of planning.” The couple obtained their marriage license that day.
Montgomery described the choice simply: “We just wanted to be married.” Their decision was not to recreate the larger celebration they had planned, but to make the anniversary itself their wedding day.

How they made the home ceremony feel like a wedding
They transformed their hallway into an aisle with LED lights, reusing items from their engagement night. Grace wore the wedding dress she had bought after Montgomery proposed; Montgomery wore a red suit from her closet. The arrangement was modest, but the moment held the emotional weight of a formal aisle for Montgomery.
Grace’s cousin, who became ordained to officiate, led the ceremony remotely over Zoom. Angel, Grace’s son, joined in several roles: ring bearer, best man, man of honor and “flower guy.” Those details are recounted in the Equally Wed account, which summarizes the People interview rather than reporting a separate firsthand interview.

Why Montgomery said it still felt special
Montgomery said watching Grace walk down their hallway moved her as much as she imagined an in-person entrance would. “Even though it was a Zoom wedding, and people weren’t actually in person, it didn’t feel any different. I was still crying when I saw her walking down our hallway.”
Grace later reflected that the simplicity helped make the day meaningful: “I think it was even more special. We didn’t have to even really think about the planning and all that turmoil that people experience before their wedding.” Their account describes a personal choice that worked for them, not a rule for couples whose plans are disrupted.

The one thing they wished they had captured better
The couple later said they did not have good footage of the Zoom ceremony. They put their wedding outfits on again for an official photo shoot at their Atlanta home, preserving images of the day even though the ceremony recording was disappointing. Their story leaves a useful distinction: a ceremony can feel complete to the people getting married even when the documentation falls short.
