Robert Downey Jr. is already set to play Victor von Doom, or Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday. The twelve actors below are our hypothetical alternatives—not rumored contenders, reported auditions, or unannounced casting. They’re personal picks based on screen presence and the kinds of performances that could make Doom’s intelligence, menace, and private self compelling.
Marvel Studios announced Downey as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024. Disney’s later cast announcement identifies his role as Victor von Doom and notes that he played Tony Stark/Iron Man in 10 films. Disney currently lists Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026, with Downey as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. (Disney’s 2024 announcement; Disney’s 2025 cast announcement; Disney’s current film page.)
How we chose these hypothetical Doom performances
This is a wish list, not a prediction or a ranking of who Marvel should cast. We favored actors whose screen work suggests some combination of authority, intelligence, controlled menace, theatricality, and the ability to shift between spectacle and vulnerability. Each pick would also bring a distinct screen identity rather than simply echoing Downey’s already-announced interpretation.
12 actors we’d love to see as Doctor Doom
1. Mads Mikkelsen
Mikkelsen can make intelligence feel dangerous without raising his voice. His precise, restrained performances often carry an unmistakable sense of control—an appealing fit for a ruler who sees every encounter as a contest of wills. Doom would also give him room to make stillness feel as imposing as armor.

Bardem has a formidable screen presence, but his appeal for Doom is not simply physical force. He can make a character charismatic and unsettling at the same time, a useful combination for a leader who might inspire loyalty while making resistance feel perilous.
3. Cillian Murphy
Murphy’s focused intensity could suit a Doom whose mind is always working several moves ahead. He can suggest a private, guarded interior beneath a composed exterior, making the unmasked moments as intriguing as the larger-than-life public persona.

4. Giancarlo Esposito
Esposito excels at controlled authority: the calm voice, the exacting gaze, the sense that a character has already considered every outcome. That quality could make Doom’s intellect legible in a conversation, not just in a display of technology or power.
5. Lee Pace
Pace has the scale and theatrical confidence for a ruler who expects a room to bend around him. He could lean into Doom’s grandeur without losing the precision that keeps an imposing character from becoming merely bombastic.

6. Ralph Fiennes
Fiennes can move between elegance and menace with unnerving ease. His command of formal, heightened performances would suit Doom’s regal self-presentation, while his dramatic range could make the character’s pride and private costs feel human rather than ornamental.
7. Mahershala Ali
Ali’s measured performances often communicate authority through restraint. He could make Doom feel thoughtful and self-possessed, with menace emerging from conviction rather than volume—a markedly different flavor from Downey’s return to the MCU in a new role.

9. Charles Dance
Dance brings an unmistakable sense of command, and his performances can turn a measured line into a declaration of power. He would be an especially intriguing choice for a Doom defined by icy discipline and the belief that authority belongs to him.

10. Daniel Day-Lewis
Day-Lewis’s transformative approach could make Doom’s public mask and private identity feel like two carefully constructed performances. It is a dream casting choice rather than a practical prediction, but the character’s theatricality and inner contradictions offer rich dramatic territory.
11. Oscar Isaac
Isaac has the range to make intelligence, intensity, and vulnerability coexist. He could give Doom a restless interior life while still projecting the confidence of someone convinced that his vision is the only one capable of saving the world.
12. Andrew Scott
Scott can make charm feel unpredictable and conviction feel unsettling. That combination could create a Doom who is captivating in intimate scenes and unnerving in public—someone whose danger lies as much in persuasion as in power.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Downey’s casting makes these alternatives purely hypothetical
At the 2024 announcement, Avengers: Doomsday co-director Joe Russo said, “If we’re gonna bring Victor Von Doom to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we’re going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character.” The line introduced Downey’s casting, not a public list of alternatives. Disney’s current film page names Downey as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, so these picks should be read as fancasting, not claims about Marvel’s casting process.
Recommended Free Tools
The announced Avengers: Doomsday ensemble also includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, following Disney’s announcement of the Fantastic Four cast and its later cast announcement for the film. Their presence places Doom in a story connected to the Fantastic Four, but it does not make any of the twelve names above more than imaginative choices.
