The six-episode Netflix series uses a deadly contest to pull viewers through Japan’s Meiji-era upheaval, but its strongest material is not the game’s prize: it is the people forced to fight as the old samurai order disappears. The violence is graphic, and the survival premise can crowd out nuance; the series is most compelling when it lets character and change matter as much as combat.
What is Last Samurai Standing about?
Set in Japan in 1878, during the transition into the Meiji era, the series follows Shujiro, a once-undefeated samurai who enters a deadly survival contest in an effort to save his family and villagers. Netflix’s official description frames the competition as a route from Kyoto to Tokyo, with a 100-billion-yen prize and one survivor. Netflix’s 2024 production announcement says 292 warriors assembled at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple; that count is best understood as Netflix’s promotional description of the gathering, rather than a complete explanation of every contest rule.
The premise makes the country’s political and social change immediate: warriors whose status and livelihood are fading are pushed into a contest that turns survival into spectacle. A cholera outbreak adds pressure to the setting. The series gives its period drama a forceful engine, though the contest is a heightened fictional device, not a documentary account of the Meiji transition.
Is it like Squid Game or Shōgun?
The comparisons are useful as shorthand, but neither is a precise description. Like Squid Game, Last Samurai Standing organizes much of its suspense around a competition in which losing can mean death. Its contestants are armed samurai, however, and its route-based contest unfolds against a specific historical transition rather than the contemporary setting and social critique associated with Squid Game. The game supplies momentum; it is not a one-to-one match in theme or format.

Shōgun is a more natural reference for viewers seeking Japanese period drama, but the two series approach that territory differently. Last Samurai Standing is built around action and survival, with the decline of samurai status shaping the characters’ predicament. It is not simply another court-and-politics drama, and the shared historical backdrop does not make the shows equivalent in subject or style. Go in expecting a violent action series with period context, rather than a direct substitute for either title.
Does the action and character work hold up?
Action is central to the show’s identity, not a garnish between historical scenes. Junichi Okada stars as Shujiro and is also credited by Netflix as producer and action choreographer. He described his aim to the Associated Press as a work with “more of a story, and more depth in character portrayal, more of a depiction of culture.” That ambition is reflected in the series’ effort to give the fighting emotional stakes: Shujiro is not entering the contest for abstract glory, but to protect people who depend on him.

The premise naturally places pressure on character development. With a large field of opponents and a race toward Tokyo, the contest can make characters feel like obstacles in a succession of battles. The drama is strongest when it gives those people motives beyond survival and lets the broader social upheaval inform what they stand to lose. AP’s launch-period coverage also noted that the women characters feel more modern than stereotypes in older samurai works; that is the outlet’s observation, not a claim that every character escapes familiar genre conventions.
How violent is Last Samurai Standing?
Very. This is not a bloodless or offscreen-heavy samurai adventure. The Associated Press reported graphic violence, including blood, gore and severed heads. Viewers who are uncomfortable with explicit sword violence should treat that as a substantial content warning, rather than assume the historical setting softens the show’s impact.

AP also reported Okada’s statement that performers in crowded battle scenes were human rather than computer-generated. That is an attributed production comment, not an independent technical audit of every sequence. The practical effect the series is aiming for is physical immediacy: violence is meant to feel dangerous, not decorative.
What is the series based on, and who made it?
Last Samurai Standing adapts Ikusagami, a historical-fiction work by Shogo Imamura, illustrated by Katsumi Tatsuzawa. Netflix Tudum says it was serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine over four volumes. About Netflix identifies Imamura as the winner of the 166th Naoki Prize in 2021. The series is an adaptation, so viewers should not assume that its events or character arcs constitute a literal retelling of historical events.

Netflix credits Michihito Fujii, Kento Yamaguchi and Toru Yamamoto as directors, and Fujii, Yamaguchi and Risa Yashiro on screenplay. The production’s stated aim is to combine period drama and action: Okada told Tudum, “My hidden goal was to create a new kind of period drama, one that’s also an action drama.”

The first season has six episodes and premiered on Netflix on November 13, 2025. Netflix has renewed the series for season two, but its official renewal page does not provide a release date. Netflix Tudum reported that the first season charted in the Top 10 in 88 countries and reached No. 1 on the weekly global Top 10 for non-English series; it also reported a No. 1 position in Japan for four consecutive weeks. These are Netflix-reported chart rankings, not independent viewership totals.

Is Last Samurai Standing worth watching?
Yes, if you want a brisk, highly physical period drama whose survival-game hook is tied to the loss of an entire social order. Its clearest strengths are the urgency of its contest, the force of its action, and the family stakes that give Shujiro’s fight a purpose. Its graphic violence and crowded battle-driven structure will not suit everyone, and the series should not be mistaken for a measured historical documentary. For viewers in the mood for an action-led story about survival during change, it offers more than a simple mash-up of familiar hits.
Netflix’s official title page is the direct place to check where the series is available; catalog access and subscription terms can vary by region. For the source story, check the language, format and edition of Ikusagami before buying: Netflix identifies the work and its serialization, but a particular translated edition or retailer listing is not established by those details.
