NCIS: Origins reveals that Special Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez is the “her” at the heart of a story Gibbs says he never tells. The prequel makes her a major part of his previously untold past, but the cited coverage does not establish why the older Gibbs never mentioned her in the original NCIS—or what ultimately happened to her.
What Lala’s “secret impact” on Gibbs means
In the 2024 premiere, older Gibbs introduces the story with the words, “This is a story I don’t tell… This is the story… of her.” TVLine’s October 14, 2024 premiere coverage identifies “her” as Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez, played by Mariel Molino. The line is fictional Gibbs’s narration, not a statement by actor Mark Harmon about his own life.

The significance is not that the original series had already named Lala. Rather, Origins adds an important relationship to the history behind the guarded character viewers knew later. Co-showrunner David J. North called Lala a “centerpiece” in the larger story of how Gibbs became Gibbs, according to TVLine’s premiere coverage. The prequel gives the character a private past that the original show had not disclosed in the cited account.
How the two series tell Gibbs’s story differently
NCIS: the later-career Gibbs
The original series follows Gibbs later in his investigative career. Premiere coverage describes him as a man of few words, and TVLine reports that Harmon’s Gibbs never said Lala’s name during his long run. That makes the prequel’s narration a deliberate contrast: the older Gibbs frames this particular history as something he does not tell.

NCIS: Origins: an early-career story from the inside
Origins goes back to Gibbs’s early investigative career and uses older Gibbs’s narration to open a window on his inner life. In a TVLine interview published October 21, 2024, Molino described Lala as someone who would have a major effect on Gibbs’s path and said the two would learn to trust each other. Her role therefore matters both as a developing relationship and as part of the story of the person Gibbs becomes.
Lala and Gibbs: what the reported story establishes
- The premiere identifies the subject of Gibbs’s untold story. The “her” in the older Gibbs’s narration is Lala Dominguez, the NIS agent played by Mariel Molino.
- The early relationship is built around trust. Molino told TVLine that Lala would significantly affect Gibbs’s path and that the pair would learn to trust one another.
- The Season 1 finale makes Gibbs’s feelings explicit, then leaves a crisis unresolved. In its April 28, 2025 finale coverage, TVLine reports that Gibbs says he loved Lala after a car crash leaves her apparently lifeless. The post-finale account does not confirm her fate.
- The Season 2 finale advances the romance but adds another cliffhanger. TVLine’s May 5, 2026 recap reports that Gibbs and Lala share their first kiss after she considers leaving NIS. The same finale leaves Randy’s kidnapping unresolved.
Why didn’t Gibbs mention Lala in the original show?
The available coverage establishes the silence as a mystery, not its explanation. The premise invites viewers to ask why Gibbs never mentioned Lala, but the cited premiere and finale reporting does not confirm whether she died, disappeared, or ended her relationship with him in a particular way. Any of those answers would go beyond what these accounts establish.
That distinction matters: knowing that Lala is central to an untold chapter does not reveal why Gibbs kept that chapter private. The story has developed through the Season 2 finale, but the cited coverage still does not supply a definitive explanation for his silence or Lala’s ultimate fate.
