The ending is a deliberate collision between the film’s compassionate world and a new form of human threat. Director Danny Boyle described it as “reintroducing evil into what has been a compassionate environment.” The blond-wigged, tracksuit-wearing Jimmy and his followers also evoke Jimmy Savile—but the film never names Savile, so that resemblance is best understood as a disturbing allusion, not confirmed backstory.
What happens at the end of 28 Years Later?
After leaving Holy Island, Spike is alone on the mainland when infected overwhelm him. A group of flamboyantly dressed figures intervene, dispatching the infected with stylized acrobatics, then invite Spike to join them. Their leader introduces himself as Jimmy. He is the adult version of the child survivor shown in the film’s opening.

The rescue is not a reassuring arrival of ordinary allies. It abruptly shifts the danger from the infected to a group of people whose theatrical appearance and violence suggest that survival has produced a new kind of menace.
What does the ending mean?
Boyle gave the clearest explanation in a June 21, 2025 interview with The Independent: “[The ending] is about reintroducing evil into what has been a compassionate environment.” He said screenwriter Alex Garland described the first film as being about “the nature of family” and the second as being about “the nature of evil.”
#1 Best Overall
- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
That framing puts the Jimmies in contrast with the care, family bonds and remembrance that have shaped the film. One useful interpretation is that the group offers belonging on coercive, violent terms: a stark counterpoint to compassion rather than its continuation. The ending does not spell out exactly what Boyle means by “evil,” so more specific claims about the group’s beliefs or motives remain interpretation.
The sequence also changes the story’s direction. Spike has survived the infected, but his rescue introduces a new human danger and points toward what may follow for him.
Rank #2
- Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later - but turning that world on its head - Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
Why are Jimmy and his followers dressed like Jimmy Savile?
The group’s repeated name, blond wigs, bright tracksuits and conspicuous jewelry create a recognizable visual association with Savile. Vanity Fair discusses the resemblance, while British GQ makes an important distinction: “Look, Savile is never explicitly referenced in 28 Years Later, but he doesn’t need to be.” That is a critic describing the allusion, not a line of dialogue from the movie.
Savile was a once-famous British television presenter associated with Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It. His entertainer persona became inseparable from the later exposure of his abuse. The reference is jarring because Jimmy and his followers appear to reproduce the public image without the knowledge that gives it its full meaning. Vanity Fair suggests an in-world possibility: a child who lived through the outbreak might remember Savile chiefly as a famous, eccentric entertainer. The film does not confirm that explanation or establish that the Jimmies are literal Savile devotees.

The resemblance is one layer of the ending, not the whole explanation. Boyle’s own description is broader: evil returns to a setting built around compassion.
How does Jimmy connect to the opening?
In the prologue, young Jimmy survives the infected attack on his family while watching Teletubbies. The film later reveals him as the adult leading the Jimmies. That return links the opening’s childhood trauma to the group’s name and look, and makes the final rescue feel like a loop closing rather than a random encounter.

The film does not state a precise psychological chain from what young Jimmy witnessed to the person he becomes. It is reasonable to read his later persona as shaped by trauma and by a cultural image he retained, but the exact explanation is left open.
There are earlier hints of his presence. TIME notes an infected person with Jimmy’s name carved into his flesh and an ode scratched on a wall. Those clues sit within a film whose prevailing mood is mournful and intimate; the showy, violent rescue breaks that mood and makes the group’s arrival unsettling.

Is the ending a political allegory?
It can invite broader readings, but Garland cautioned against treating the film as a deliberate one-to-one allegory. In a June 18, 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said: “We don’t sit down and say, ‘Let’s make an allegory’ — that’s not it.” He added that preoccupations can drift into a story and become, in retrospect, a record of the filmmakers’ concerns.
Garland also distinguished Britain’s enforced isolation in the film from Brexit: “Brexit was an idiotic thing we did to ourselves. This has been enforced by other people.” The film’s circumstances may resonate with contemporary political anxieties, but that is different from claiming the Jimmies or the ending encode a specific political message.
A more grounded thematic reading follows the contrast Boyle described: family compassion against coercive belonging. Another possible reading sets Dr. Kelson’s work of remembering the dead against the living’s capacity to create fresh forms of cruelty. That second contrast is an interpretation of the film’s juxtaposition, not a meaning the filmmakers have confirmed.
