Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 brought screen actors Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox into its cast alongside game-voice performers Ben Starr and Jennifer English. In a story published April 24, 2025, The Verge’s Tom Regan reported that the game’s striking world, characters and themes helped attract them—not a documented casting formula or business deal.

- Andy Serkis voices Renoir.
- Charlie Cox voices Gustave.
- Ben Starr voices Verso.
- Jennifer English voices Maelle.
Regan’s story focuses on how Serkis and Cox joined a production that also included actors with established video-game roles. The article does not establish that the studio followed a broader strategy of recruiting screen stars.
Why did Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox join the game?
Andy Serkis was drawn to the world and its themes
Serkis told Regan that the game’s visual style, world-building, characters and themes caught his attention. The painting imagery also connected with his own interest in painting before he became an actor. These are his reported reasons for being interested in the project; the article does not give contract details or describe a particular recruitment process.

Serkis plays Renoir, a character the story presents within a world shaped by the Paintress and the threat of disappearance. Regan also discusses Serkis’s approach to morally ambiguous characters, rather than reducing the role to a simple good-versus-evil performance.
Charlie Cox was drawn to the characters
Cox’s reported interest centered on the characters. The article does not provide a more specific account of his decision, so it would be speculative to assign him the same motivations Serkis described or to claim that a particular production feature secured his involvement.

Ben Starr and Jennifer English responded to the performances and script
Starr praised the cast’s performances and the production’s ambition. He also said Serkis and Cox approached their roles with care, rather than treating the game as a brief detour. English said she identified with Maelle’s bravery and emotional depth after reading the script.
What makes Expedition 33 an unusual role-playing game?
A painterly setting with a mortality-focused premise
The game’s surreal setting centers on the Paintress, who writes a descending number on a monolith. People of that age disappear; a group of 33-year-olds sets out to try to end the cycle. Regan’s article says more than 60 expeditions have already met a grim end in the game’s fictional history.

A French creative identity and hybrid combat
Regan describes Sandfall’s roughly 30-person team as drawing on classic role-playing games and Belle Époque-era Impressionist painters while pursuing a French take on the genre. In combat, turn-based play is combined with real-time defensive actions. Together, these elements give the actors a more particular creative context than a generic fantasy setting, though the article does not claim that any one feature caused a casting decision.
