NCIS: Hawaiʻi will not return for Season 4. CBS canceled the crime drama after three seasons, and its two-part episode on May 6, 2024, served as the series finale. The cancellation is settled; what a fourth season might have explored remains only a set of possibilities shared by the former showrunners.
Why did CBS cancel NCIS: Hawaiʻi?
CBS executives described the decision as a combination of scheduling and business considerations, rather than identifying one definitive cause. Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, said the network had to assess “the cohesiveness of the schedule flow” alongside financials and overall performance. The remarks were reported by TVLine on May 2, 2024.

CBS president and CEO George Cheeks also cited performance and financials. According to TheWrap’s May 2 report, Cheeks said shifting the canceled shows to Paramount+ was not an option, with the service having a limited number of slots. Taken together, the executives’ public comments point to a slate-wide scheduling and financial decision; they do not establish that any single consideration caused this show’s cancellation.
Were ratings the reason?
Reported audience figures do not support describing the show’s ratings simply as collapsing, but ratings alone cannot explain CBS’s decision. TVLine reported that Season 3 averaged 7.8 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating using Live+7 playback data. Compared with Season 2, the audience was up 4%, while the demo rating was down one tenth. Among CBS’s 14 dramas in the 2023–24 season, the series ranked sixth in total audience and eighth in the demo, according to TVLine’s report.

Those are figures reported by TVLine, not an independently verified primary ratings dataset. Ratings also depend on the measurement window, and these figures do not prove why CBS canceled the show.
What would Season 4 have been about?
The show’s three co-showrunners—Jan Nash, Christopher Silber and Matt Bosack—said they were surprised by the cancellation. They had ended Season 3 on a cliffhanger without expecting that the episode would be the series’ last. In a July 26, 2024 TVLine interview, they discussed directions they might have taken, while stressing that a full Season 4 story had not been mapped out.

- Jane and Maggie: The Maggie story could have intersected with Jane Tennant’s mother and Jane’s spy past.
- Lucy and Kate: Their relationship would have made “some movement,” but the showrunners had not decided whether that meant a wedding, meeting families or something else.
- Jesse’s family: Jesse’s wife was likely to appear eventually.
These were post-cancellation ideas, not completed scripts or a settled season plan. In May 2024, Reisenbach said there was no chance of an “un-cancellation,” and TVLine reported that the series was not being shopped elsewhere. Those statements describe the situation reported at that time; they do not turn the hypothetical Season 4 storylines into produced episodes.
