Jack Black’s strongest screen work ranges from a defining comic lead to distinctive voice acting, broad ensemble comedy and an unexpectedly restrained dramatic performance. This subjective ranking weighs the strength and distinctiveness of his performance, the work’s rewatchability, its place in his career, and how well it shows a different part of his range. It includes substantial screen roles rather than filling television slots with unverified cameos; no single definitive ranking combines his film and TV work.

How this ranking works

Black’s career is not just a run of broad live-action comedies. Apple TV identifies him as Dewey Finn in School of Rock and Po in Kung Fu Panda, while Rotten Tomatoes’ career roundup places films such as High Fidelity, Nacho Libre, King Kong, Tropic Thunder and the Jumanji revival among his notable work. Those guides offer context, not an objective order: Rotten Tomatoes’ career guide and Apple TV’s profile.

The list ranks individual screen performances, not franchises as a whole. Where two films share a role, they are listed together to avoid treating a continuing character as two unrelated performances. The ranking is an editorial judgment, not a claim that shifting review scores or a single source settle what “best” means.

The 15 best Jack Black movies and TV shows

  1. School of Rock (2003)

As Dewey Finn, a failed musician who poses as a substitute teacher, Black turns a selfish, chaotic screw-up into the engine of a warm ensemble comedy. His musical energy is integral to the character rather than a detachable flourish, and the film gives that energy a clear arc: Dewey learns to take the children seriously without losing his irreverence. It is the most complete expression of his live-action comic and musical persona, and a natural starting point for anyone exploring his work.

  2. Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Black’s voice performance as Po makes an anxious, food-loving underdog feel both funny and sincere. Voice acting demands character through timing and tone alone; Black gives Po buoyancy without making his insecurity a joke. The role also shows how well his comic instincts translate to family animation, anchoring a durable franchise. Apple TV’s profile lists him as Po as well as Dewey Finn: Apple TV.

  3. High Fidelity (2000)

As Barry, a sharp-tongued record-store employee, Black makes a supporting role hard to forget. His abrasive confidence and deep enthusiasm for music land as two sides of the same personality, not just a succession of outbursts. The part helped establish the screen presence that later carried leading comedies, while fitting naturally into a film built around music and messy romantic self-examination. Rotten Tomatoes includes it among Black’s cult-favorite work: Rotten Tomatoes.

  4. Bernie (2011)

Black plays Bernie Tiede, a real-life Texas funeral director, in a performance that is notably gentler and more measured than his signature comic leads. The film draws on his warmth and awkwardness without relying on sheer volume; the result makes the character’s friendliness and unsettling circumstances coexist. It is an important counterpoint to the idea that Black’s range begins and ends with exuberant comedy. Rotten Tomatoes’ profile coverage highlights the dramatic turn alongside Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey: Rotten Tomatoes.

  5. Tropic Thunder (2008)

In a large comic ensemble, Black plays Jeff Portnoy, a movie star whose career is built on crude comedy and who is struggling with addiction. He commits to the character’s vanity and desperation while keeping the performance sharply comic. The role demonstrates how effectively Black can contribute to a crowded cast without needing to be the story’s sole center of gravity. Rotten Tomatoes includes the film among his notable blockbusters and cult favorites: Rotten Tomatoes.

  6. Nacho Libre (2006)

As Ignacio, a monastery cook who secretly becomes a masked wrestler, Black makes an oddball premise feel tender as well as silly. The character’s earnestness is the joke’s anchor: he wants to help the children in his care, even as he pursues wrestling glory with very little grace. Its distinctive, awkward comic style has made the film a cult favorite, even if it is less universally polished than his best work. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup identifies it among those cult titles: Rotten Tomatoes.

  7. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

In the revived Jumanji films, Black plays a game avatar inhabited by a teenage girl, giving him a comic performance built around a mismatch between body and personality. His precise choices—posture, confidence and social awkwardness—make the premise legible rather than simply loud. The pair earn their place for a different kind of ensemble work: Black shares the spotlight and helps make a high-concept franchise character immediately recognizable. Rotten Tomatoes’ career roundup includes the Jumanji revival among his prominent work: Rotten Tomatoes.

    • Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
  8. King Kong (2005)

As filmmaker Carl Denham, Black takes a supporting role in a large-scale adventure and gives its ambition a human source: Denham is driven, opportunistic and willing to push too far for a spectacle. It is a striking change of register from the genial or goofy leads that define much of Black’s popular image. The film’s scale and his character’s moral compromise make it a useful marker of his work beyond comedy. Rotten Tomatoes names it among his major films: Rotten Tomatoes.

  9. Jumanji performances, considered as a pair

The two films also deserve recognition for the consistency of Black’s characterization across a role that could easily have become a one-note impersonation. He adapts the same central conceit to different ensemble situations, making a game avatar’s awkward bravado funny while keeping the character emotionally readable. They rank below his signature roles because the films distribute their attention among several players, but the performance remains one of his clearest later-career demonstrations of comic craft.

  10. The Holiday (2006)

Black plays Miles, a film composer and romantic interest, in a role that leans on his warmth more than his manic energy. The performance is appealing precisely because it is comparatively low-key: his humor comes through in casual reactions and musical enthusiasm rather than a comic set piece. It rounds out his work in a mainstream romantic comedy and shows how easily his screen persona can soften into an approachable supporting lead.

  11. Orange County (2002)

As Lance, the older brother of a student desperate to get into Stanford, Black supplies the movie’s most chaotic counterweight to college-application anxiety. He makes Lance’s irresponsibility funny without confusing it for admirable behavior, and his loose energy gives the comedy a jolt. It is a smaller, less defining role than Dewey Finn, but a useful example of how his supporting performances could steal focus.

  12. Shallow Hal (2001)

Black leads this romantic comedy as Hal, a man whose perspective on women changes after a supernatural intervention. The premise and its treatment of appearance can feel dated, but Black’s performance is more engaging when it lets Hal’s vanity and insecurity show through the broad comedy. It belongs on a career list as an early starring vehicle, though its tonal and thematic limitations keep it well below his most enduring work.

  13. Gulliver’s Travels (2010)

Black’s Gulliver is an ordinary office worker who finds himself in a fantastical setting, a setup that naturally suits his taste for outsized reactions. The film is an uneven showcase, but his performance keeps the character’s insecurity visible beneath the scale of the jokes. It earns a place for demonstrating his family-adventure lead mode, not because it is as distinctive or accomplished as School of Rock or Kung Fu Panda.

  14. Mr. Show with Bob and David (1995–1998)

Black’s television history includes Mr. Show, an early sketch-comedy platform that offers a different context for his performance style than feature leads do. The show belongs on this list because sketch work rewards fast shifts in character and tone, and it gives viewers a way to see Black as part of an ensemble comedy tradition. It ranks lower because the available career sources establish his connection to the series but do not provide enough episode-level detail to single out a specific sketch or role responsibly. Rotten Tomatoes’ profile notes the series in his television history: Rotten Tomatoes.

  15. The X-Files (1998)

Black also appeared on television in The X-Files, an unusually memorable detour from his later screen identity as a comedy and family-film lead. Its inclusion recognizes that television work as part of his career rather than treating a movies-and-TV ranking as film-only. The available profile coverage confirms the series connection, but does not establish episode-level detail sufficient to rank a particular scene or character above his more fully documented performances: Rotten Tomatoes.

What the ranking says about Black’s range

The top entries show why Black’s screen persona lasts: he can make exuberance feel like a real character trait rather than a volume setting. Dewey Finn and Po are very different roles, but both depend on enthusiasm that can become vulnerability. His supporting turns in High Fidelity and Tropic Thunder use that energy more sharply, while Bernie makes restraint the point. The television entries are included as meaningful career context, not as a claim that brief appearances should outrank his best-developed film performances.
