Kennedy Jr. as a child, friend, husband, colleague and pilot. The accounts offer personal perspectives on his life and final days; they do not settle every disputed detail of his marriage or replace the official investigation into the 1999 plane crash.
What book is the excerpt from?
The excerpt comes from JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil. Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, gave permission for the excerpt’s publication in PEOPLE’s July 10, 2024 article: the exclusive excerpt and accompanying article.
A related PEOPLE article published July 15, 2024 describes the book as based on more than 200 interviews and says it explores John’s thoughts about entering “the family business” of politics. That figure is the article’s description of the book; it is not a claim that every memory in the excerpt has been independently corroborated. The July 15 report also quotes historian and friend Steve Gillon recalling, “John wanted to run for governor of New York,” and saying his ultimate goal was to return to the White House. That is Gillon’s recollection, not a documented campaign announcement.
What do the friends and associates remember?
The excerpt moves through different periods of Kennedy’s life, bringing together voices connected to his family, school and college years, friendships, marriage, magazine work and flying. Contributors include friends, wedding associates, his former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio, Navy chaplain Father John K. O’Connor and NTSB investigator Jeff Guzzetti. Each account reflects the speaker’s own relationship and memory, rather than a single consensus about Kennedy’s private life.

Terenzio, who was both a friend and assistant, recounts events around the group’s final evening and the recovery of personal effects. Guzzetti offers a separate account of the crash sequence. Keeping those voices distinct matters: a friend’s memory of the day and an investigator’s explanation serve different purposes.
Does the excerpt establish that John and Carolyn had separated?
No. The excerpt includes one friend’s account of marital tension and reports that Kennedy spent at least one night at the Stanhope Hotel. Those details do not establish that he and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy had definitively separated.
Accounts of the couple’s final days vary. In a July 11 PEOPLE article, former girlfriend Julie Baker said, “There is a rumor going around that I was with him at the Stanhope [that night]. This is not true.” The article reports that Baker had lunch with Kennedy at the hotel a few days before the crash, not that she was with him on the final night. Read the July 11 report.
What does the excerpt say about the fatal plane crash?
John F. Kennedy Jr. died at age 38 on July 16, 1999, when the plane he was piloting crashed off Martha’s Vineyard. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette also died. The group had been traveling toward Martha’s Vineyard and Hyannis for a family wedding.

Factors in the accident were haze and the dark night.” This is the NTSB determination as reproduced in the article, not a conclusion drawn from the friends’ recollections. For technical findings, the agency’s investigation is the relevant record; an oral biography provides personal accounts, not a substitute for that investigation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What kind of account is this?
The book excerpt is best read as an interview-based oral biography: its value is in the range of memories and personal perspectives it brings together. It can illuminate how people close to Kennedy remember him, while leaving disagreements and unanswered questions visible. Its recollections should not be treated as proof of a definitive account of his marriage or as the primary source for technical conclusions about the crash.
