Spoilers for Rebecca Yarros’s Onyx Storm. Xaden’s immediate challenge after becoming venin is controlling his power. In the novel’s interrogation-cell scene, Jack Barlowe warns that control “goes quickly” and suggests Xaden could turn that power against Violet. It is a threat from Jack, not confirmation that Xaden will lose control or hurt her.
What does the reveal say Xaden must overcome?
Violet overhears Jack speaking to Xaden in the interrogation cells. Jack connects Xaden’s use of power drawn from the earth with the danger of being venin, then taunts him about how quickly control can slip away. The scene makes self-control the central challenge: Xaden must contend with power that Jack presents as dangerous to wield.
Why does Jack bring Violet into the threat?
Jack makes the warning personal by suggesting Xaden could turn his power against Violet. That raises the stakes beyond Xaden’s own safety: the person he cares about could be at risk if he loses control. But the scene establishes Jack’s warning and the danger he is invoking—not that Xaden actually attacks Violet.
Does this confirm Xaden will lose control?
No. Jack is speaking to provoke and threaten Xaden. His prediction signals a serious conflict for Xaden, but dialogue from a hostile character is not proof of a guaranteed future outcome. The reveal points to the possibility that Xaden’s control could fail; it does not settle whether it will.
