No official announcement has cast Riz Ahmed as James Bond. Ahmed has discussed the speculation and the fictional Bond audition at the centre of his series Bait; the show is not evidence that he auditioned for or won the real role.
Has Riz Ahmed been cast as the next James Bond?
The reviewed sources do not confirm Ahmed’s casting. In a May 14, 2026 statement, Amazon MGM Studios said the search for the next Bond was underway and that it would not comment on specific details during the casting process. The studio did not name the actor. Amazon MGM Studios’ statement

The studio did announce the next film’s creative team: Denis Villeneuve as director, Amy Pascal and David Heyman as producers, Tanya Lapointe as executive producer, and Steven Knight as writer. It described the film as the first Bond chapter following Daniel Craig’s tenure, which ended with No Time to Die in 2021. None of those details identifies the next 007.
What has Ahmed said about the Bond talk?
Ahmed acknowledged that his name had appeared in speculation, but described it as one of many possibilities—not a sign of a casting decision. In the Los Angeles Times interview, he called the idea “an interesting thought experiment” and said his name had come up “along with, you know, everyone and their dog.”

In an August 2026 Vanity Fair interview, he was still more pointed about his own chances: “I think there’s very little danger of that, especially after this show,” he said, referring to the prospect of being cast as Bond.
Is the Bond audition in Bait real?
No. Bait is a fictional series in which Ahmed plays Shah Latif, an actor who auditions for James Bond. Vanity Fair describes Latif as failing the audition and becoming consumed by the pursuit of becoming the first Pakistani 007. The Guardian likewise characterizes it as a comedy about an actor who bungles an audition and then finds himself in the running. Those events belong to the story, not Ahmed’s real casting history. Why does Bait use James Bond?
Ahmed has said the series is interested in more than whether an actor like him could get the part. “The premise of the show was something a bit more emotional than that,” he told the Los Angeles Times. For Latif, Bond represents aspiration and achievement; the audition also gives the show a way to examine identity and the difference between a person’s public and private selves.
Ahmed described the character’s idea of Bond as “a symbol of aspiration, pinnacle of achievement in this industry and also of alpha masculinity and all this kind of stuff.” In other words, the fictional audition lets Bait explore what the role means to its character, rather than announce anything about who will play Bond in the next film.

What is confirmed about the next Bond film?
Amazon MGM’s May 2026 update confirms that casting was being searched for and names the film’s director, producers, executive producer, and writer. Its statement says it will share more when the time is right; it does not identify the next James Bond. Ahmed’s comments and Bait’s fictional plot should therefore be kept separate from the still-unannounced casting.
In a March 24, 2026 Reuters Connect interview, Ahmed also discussed Bond as a symbol of success pursued by his character and said producer Barbara Broccoli understood what the writers were trying to do after reading the scripts. That is context about the series, not confirmation of Ahmed’s involvement in the real film’s casting.
