On the October 2, 2024 episode of The Golden Bachelorette, Joan Vassos tells the men she is still grieving her late husband, John, while also trying to care for her unwell mother. A hawk she sees after a horseback ride with Jonathan brings John to mind; later, Joan says she may never feel completely healed, but she still wants love in her life.
Pascal’s Las Vegas date ends with a rose
Joan’s first one-on-one date is with Pascal. They travel to Las Vegas, share dinner at Paris Hotel, and hear Wayne Newton serenade them. Joan gives Pascal the date’s rose.

The kickball date is interrupted by worrying news
For the group date, Joan and the men play kickball with former professional football players Eric Dickerson and Andre Reed. During the day, Joan learns that her 92-year-old mother is unwell. Gil receives the group-date rose.
A hawk brings John to Joan’s mind
Joan’s next one-on-one date is with Jonathan, and the two go horseback riding. Jonathan talks about his Native American roots, the symbolism of turtles, and his divorce. After the ride, Joan sees a hawk and feels connected to John, her late husband.

The sighting, together with worry about her mother, leaves Joan overwhelmed. She tells the men how tiring it can be to serve as the strong caretaker in her family, and wonders whether she can welcome a new relationship while still grieving.
Joan says grief does not close her off to love
Joan is unsure whether she will ever feel fully healed. “I want to say that I’ll be 100 percent one day, but I might only ever will be 90 percent or 80 percent or whatever it is,” she says. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t want love in my life. There will always be a part of John in my heart.”

The men try to comfort her with prayer, cookies, song, and humor. Jonathan receives a rose after their date.
Gerry Turner offers support at the cocktail party
Gerry Turner, whom Joan knows from The Golden Bachelor, visits during the cocktail party. Joan says John has been especially present in her thoughts and that being away from family is difficult. Turner encourages her to breathe and ease the pressure she is putting on herself. Joan says the visit came on a night when she needed a friend.

Three men leave at the rose ceremony
Joan says goodbye to three men at the rose ceremony, including Kim. As he leaves, Kim says, “Life’s too short to not feel joy and be happy. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.” He and Joan promise to remain friends.
The episode’s emotional center is Joan’s distinction between continuing to carry John in her heart and giving up on the possibility of love. Her grief and family worries are present alongside the dates, rather than resolving neatly before the rose ceremony.
