Nelly and Ashanti first met in 2003, kept much of their relationship private, and split in 2013. After reconnecting publicly years later, Nelly confirmed in 2023 that they were “cool again.” In 2024, Ashanti announced her pregnancy and engagement; reports based on records said the couple had married in December 2023, and their son was born in July 2024. The chronology below distinguishes what the pair said from what outlets reported. The latest dated milestone covered here is July 2024, so it does not establish their status in 2026.
How Nelly and Ashanti first met
Their first meeting was at a Grammy Awards press conference in January 2003. Ashanti later recalled that Nelly jokingly asked her for an autograph and that it took him a long time to get her phone number, according to Us Weekly’s relationship timeline. The Los Angeles Times later quoted a separate memory Ashanti shared around the 2023 VMAs: “So… in this pic, we exchanged numbers at the VMAs in 2003… 20 years ago lol …” The accounts describe related early history, but do not establish that the press-conference meeting and the exchange of numbers happened at the same event.
2005–2010: Their relationship became more visible, but stayed private
2005–2007: Public appearances and a collaboration
They began appearing more often in each other’s public lives. Nelly attended Ashanti’s 25th birthday in October 2005, and Ashanti celebrated his birthday the following month. She brought him as her date to the John Tucker Must Die premiere in July 2006. In 2007, they released “Switch,” according to Us Weekly.
2009–2010: They avoided defining their status publicly
They worked together on Nelly’s “Body on Me” video in 2009, after reports that they had split had circulated. In a 2010 interview with Complex, Nelly said they had not publicly acknowledged being together, back together, or separated, and described them as friends, as recounted by Us Weekly. Later descriptions of their relationship as on-and-off and lasting roughly a decade or about eleven years are approximate; the pair kept its status private for much of that period.

Those comments provide her perspective without establishing a fuller explanation for the breakup.
