You cannot rely on YouTube’s documented feature to hand viewers automatically from a live playlist to a playlist of multiple Premieres. For a 24/7 prerecorded channel, an encoder or streaming service must keep sending the program to YouTube; treat the redirect to a Premiere as a separate, single-video handoff.
What YouTube’s redirect does—and does not do
YouTube Help describes Live Redirect as a way to send an audience from a finished live stream to a Premiere or another live stream. The destination is one selected video, not a queue of Premieres. The official instructions reviewed do not establish an automatic handoff to a playlist of multiple Premieres, chained redirects, or a playlist that takes over when a live playlist ends. YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions and its Live Redirect to Premieres walkthrough describe a source live stream and a destination Premiere.
A YouTube playlist can organize videos for viewers, but that is different from transmitting a continuous live feed. YouTube Studio schedules the live event; an encoder or streaming service supplies the audio and video. The YouTube Live Streaming API similarly distinguishes live event resources from live stream resources that carry the transmitted content. The API reference does not turn a scheduled event into a playlist player.
Set up one live stream followed by one Premiere
- Schedule the Premiere first. In YouTube, select the video and schedule it as a Premiere for the intended time. Confirm its visibility and timing. YouTube recommends creating the destination Premiere before configuring Live Redirect.
- Schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live → Manage → Schedule stream. Reuse prior stream settings or create a new event. Scheduling makes the event page; it does not itself provide the program feed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the separate connection step.
- Connect an encoder or streaming service. Enter YouTube’s server URL and the stream key in the encoder. Start the feed and check its preview in Live Control Room, then choose Go live when ready unless you have configured and verified auto-start. Treat the stream key as a credential: YouTube describes it as the address and password that allow it to accept the encoder feed. Do not share it publicly.
- Choose the redirect destination. In YouTube Studio’s Live videos/Content area, or from Live Control Room, edit the source live stream and select the scheduled Premiere as the Live Redirect destination. Save the change. The destination must already exist.
- End the live feed before the Premiere is scheduled to begin. YouTube says the Premiere can start on the same watch page after the live stream ends. Tell viewers to stay on that page rather than leaving or refreshing. YouTube Help estimates that the page reload may take about two seconds; the timing is an estimate, not a guaranteed transition time.
What to do for a 24/7 prerecorded channel
A 24/7 channel needs an encoder or service that continuously sends the prerecorded program to YouTube. A playlist displayed on your channel is not, by itself, that feed. If your intended programming is a continuous rotation of recordings, configure the playout system to deliver that feed as a live stream. If you also want a Premiere afterward, set up a Live Redirect to that one Premiere and end the feed before its start time.

YouTube’s encoder guide lists cloud-based 24/7 streaming tools, including Gyre and Upstream, and names the AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder with PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media. These are examples in YouTube’s guide, not a guarantee that a product supports a particular sequence of several Premieres or the exact handoff you need. Check the current product workflow before building a schedule around it. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Plan for YouTube’s stated archive limit: encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one continuous stream longer than that will be archived as a single uninterrupted video under the same rule.

For any method, decide whether the audience should end at one Premiere or whether you need a sequence of separate videos. YouTube’s documented redirect addresses the first case. The reviewed instructions do not establish the second as an automatic playlist handoff. The sources provide no comparative uptime figures, so reliability should be evaluated from the provider or device details you can verify rather than inferred from YouTube’s list.

Troubleshooting the handoff
- The Premiere does not appear as a destination. Make sure the Premiere has been scheduled before editing the source live stream, then reopen the Live Redirect selection.
- Viewers remain on the live watch page. Confirm the redirect was saved on the correct source stream and that the live feed ends before the Premiere’s scheduled start. Tell viewers to remain on the watch page and allow a brief reload.
- The event is scheduled but there is no video. Scheduling the event is not the same as sending a feed. Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, is transmitting, and has a visible preview in Live Control Room.
- The feed stops during a long broadcast. Check the encoder or service’s own connection and recovery behavior. Also account for YouTube’s automatic archive guidance, which applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a promise that longer broadcasts will archive as one video.
- You expect several Premieres to play in sequence. The documented Live Redirect flow selects one destination video. Use a continuous encoder-fed program for ongoing prerecorded playback, and do not assume YouTube will automatically progress through a playlist of Premieres.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before scheduling a long prerecorded broadcast, confirm that you have the rights to every video, music track, image, and other element in the program. A recording being available on YouTube or included in a playlist does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for your channel and content; the redirect changes where viewers go, not the rights status of the material.
Also keep the stream key private and test the intended timing with the actual encoder and destination event before relying on it for a continuous schedule. The documented redirect supports a single Premiere destination; it is not a substitute for testing an unverified multi-Premiere sequence.
