There is no universal “lowest-latency streaming protocol” winner. LL-HLS and low-latency DASH are approaches for delivering live video to viewers over HTTP; SRT is commonly used to move video between contribution or distribution endpoints. CMAF is a media format that can serve both HLS and DASH, not a delivery protocol. Choose by workflow stage, required interaction, audience scale, network conditions and end-to-end delay—not by comparing unlike latency numbers.
What “low latency” measures—and why the boundary matters
For a viewer, the most useful measure is glass-to-glass delay: the time from an event in front of the camera to its appearance on the screen. That total can include capture, encoding, multiplexing, network transfer, packaging or segment splitting, decoding and display. A number measured at only one stage is not the whole viewer experience.
For example, SRT’s latency setting controls transport buffering. It does not promise a particular camera-to-screen delay. A player’s live-edge position, encoder settings, packaging cadence, CDN behavior and device decoding can all affect the final result. Compare latency figures only when their measurement boundary and conditions match.
How the technologies differ
| Technology | Role in the workflow | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| LL-HLS | Delivery to viewers | Apple’s low-latency extension to HLS uses mechanisms including partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints and rendition reports. | Production, delivery and playback systems must coordinate to support the low-latency profile. Apple says a client may fall back to regular-latency playback if the server does not meet the relevant configuration profile. [c001] |
| Low-latency DASH | Delivery to viewers | DASH signaling and delivery guidance can make media available earlier. DASH-IF identifies CMAF chunks, HTTP chunked transfer, consistent MPD signaling and client requirements as enablers. | It uses existing HTTP infrastructure, including servers, CDNs, proxies and caches, but the components still need compatible signaling and behavior. [c003][c004] |
| CMAF | Media packaging format | A segmented media format that can be used with HLS and MPEG-DASH. Apple documents that an HLS playlist and a DASH MPD can point to shared CMAF media objects. | CMAF is not a standalone streaming or transport protocol. Shared objects can support cache reuse when packaging and delivery are compatible. [c002] |
| SRT | Contribution or distribution transport | Moves video over IP networks with packet recovery and buffering intended to address jitter, packet loss and changing network conditions. | Its configurable latency is a transport buffer setting, not an end-to-end delay guarantee. The appropriate value depends on the actual link. [c005][c006] |
These technologies are not mutually exclusive alternatives for every link. A production may use SRT to carry a contribution feed to a processing point, then package and deliver the resulting stream to viewers using LL-HLS or low-latency DASH. The right comparison is between technologies doing the same job in the same part of the workflow.

What published latency figures actually tell you
- LL-HLS: Apple’s 2020 WWDC session described a stream delay of two seconds or less as a capability, not a result guaranteed in every deployment. Apple’s 2019 one-to-two-second figure was a design target for delivery at scale over the public internet with a reasonable round-trip time. Neither figure is an independent benchmark or a promise for a particular stream. [c007][c008]
- SRT: Haivision’s version 1.5.4 documentation, published in 2026, gives 20–8000 ms as the range for the configured latency buffer. This is the SRT transport setting, not total glass-to-glass delay. Haivision also gives four times round-trip time as a rule of thumb for a fairly good network with 0.1–0.2% packet loss and no significant burst loss; it is not a universal formula. [c006]
- Low-latency DASH: The cited DASH-IF and MPEG material describes techniques and requirements, but does not establish a single measured delay that applies to all deployments. [c003][c004]
These figures cannot be ranked as if they measured the same thing: the Apple figures describe a viewer-stream delay or design target under stated conditions, while the SRT number describes a configurable transport buffer. The cited material does not establish an independent, broadly applicable head-to-head performance benchmark, so it does not support naming one universal winner.
How to choose for a real workflow
- Locate the latency-sensitive link. Decide whether the problem is getting a feed from a remote camera or venue to production, or reducing delay between the packaged stream and viewers. SRT commonly addresses contribution or distribution transport; LL-HLS and low-latency DASH target HTTP-based viewer delivery. [c001][c003][c004][c005]
- Set the interaction requirement. A stream for general viewing may tolerate more delay than a workflow where presenters and viewers need to react to one another. Define a target from capture to display, not just a transport or segment setting.
- Check the whole playback path. Confirm that the encoder or packager, origin, CDN or other delivery layer, and player/device support the chosen low-latency configuration. For LL-HLS, Apple specifically documents coordinated low-latency support and possible fallback to regular-latency playback. For DASH, verify consistent MPD signaling and the required client behavior. [c001][c003][c004]
- Test the network you will use. For SRT, choose the buffer setting from the actual link’s round-trip time, loss and burst-loss behavior; too little buffering may not accommodate network variation. Haivision’s four-times-RTT guidance applies only to the stated fairly good network conditions, not every path. [c006]
- Measure at the viewer. Record the delay from a visible or audible event at capture to its appearance on representative playback devices. Repeat across the intended network and delivery configuration; a server-side setting alone cannot establish the delivered glass-to-glass result.
Where CMAF fits when HLS and DASH are both needed
CMAF can be useful when a service needs HLS and DASH presentations to reference shared media objects. Apple describes HLS playlists and a DASH MPD pointing to the same CMAF objects, which can support cache reuse across platforms if packaging and delivery are compatible. [c002]

That does not make CMAF a latency solution by itself. The low-latency behavior still depends on the way media is produced and made available, the signaling in the playlist or MPD, the HTTP delivery path, and player support. Treat CMAF as a packaging choice within a compatible low-latency workflow, not as a replacement for HLS, DASH or SRT.
Compatibility and operational checks
- Encoder and packager: Confirm they can produce the required partial segments or chunks and the signaling expected by the selected delivery approach.
- Origin and delivery path: Check that the server/CDN path supports the necessary HTTP behavior and does not defeat the intended availability or playlist/MPD updates through incompatible caching or configuration.
- Player and devices: Verify the selected low-latency profile on the clients viewers actually use. A compatible stream format does not guarantee that every player will stay at the low-latency live edge.
- Fallback behavior: Decide what viewers should experience if a client or server cannot sustain the low-latency profile. Apple documents that LL-HLS clients may fall back to regular-latency playback when relevant server configuration requirements are not met. [c001]
- Transport tuning: For SRT, test buffer settings against packet loss, jitter and changing network conditions on the actual contribution path, rather than treating the configured buffer as total stream delay. [c005][c006]
What about WebRTC?
WebRTC is often raised in discussions of interactive live video, but the available authoritative material here does not establish a detailed comparison of its latency, scaling or implementation trade-offs against LL-HLS, low-latency DASH or SRT. No precise performance claim or ranking is justified on that basis. Evaluate it separately against the same workflow, interaction, audience and measurement requirements.
