Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most creators building a 24/7 guided meditation stream, OBS is the better starting point: its documented scenes and sources make it straightforward to combine a visual, prerecorded meditation audio or video, and optional titles, while its Media Source can loop a file and it has an automatic reconnect setting. FFmpeg may suit a scripted, command-line workflow, but confirm and test the behavior of your installed version before relying on it unattended. Both must meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.
Choose by workflow, not by YouTube compatibility
OBS and FFmpeg are encoder workflows, not different ways around YouTube’s stream requirements. Either output must use settings supported by YouTube. The practical choice is whether you want to compose and operate the stream in a graphical application or maintain a command-line pipeline.
| Decision | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and operation | Visual settings, scenes and sources are documented by the OBS Project. This makes it a natural fit when you want to arrange a background, media, and titles visually. OBS overview | A command-line workflow may suit a fixed, scripted setup. The official sources available here do not establish specific loop, reconnect, or process-supervision behavior for an FFmpeg version. |
| Looping a media file | The OBS Media Source has a Loop option that replays a file when it ends. OBS Media Sources | Check the documentation for the exact installed build and test the chosen command; do not assume a generic loop command will cover every failure mode. |
| Recovery after connection loss | OBS documents an automatic reconnect configuration. It is useful, but does not guarantee recovery from every source, process, or network failure. | Reconnect and supervision behavior are version- and deployment-specific and are not established here. Verify and test them before unattended use. |
| Changing visuals or titles | Scenes and sources support a visual composition workflow and operator changes. | A fixed command-line pipeline may be suitable when the inputs and output are settled, but the sources here do not establish particular FFmpeg composition capabilities. |
| YouTube ingest | Must follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance. | Must follow the same YouTube encoder guidance. |
The workflow recommendation is not a benchmark of speed or reliability. No comparative long-duration test establishes that either application is more reliable overall.
Build the OBS stream
1. Prepare the meditation media and visual
Choose a prerecorded audio or video file and the background image or footage you have the rights to use. Keep the intended loop in mind: listen and watch through the end and beginning transition so an abrupt silence, cut, or blank frame does not surprise viewers. If you use separate audio and visuals, check that they remain synchronized throughout the full playback cycle.

2. Create a scene and add sources
- In OBS, create a scene for the live program.
- Add the background image or video as a source, then add the prerecorded media using a Media Source.
- For a file that should repeat, open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. The OBS guide documents this behavior; test the particular file to confirm the transition is acceptable. OBS Media Sources
- Add any titles or other visual elements you need. Watch the full composition at the intended output size and confirm text remains readable.
3. Configure the YouTube stream connection
In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service, and connect the account or enter the stream key as appropriate for your setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream as it travels to and through Google’s servers. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it could send a stream to your channel. YouTube’s live-control-room settings provide the stream key and ingest details. YouTube Live Control Room
OBS documents an automatic reconnect setting in its streaming configuration. Enable and test it, but do not treat it as a substitute for an operator or a tested restart plan. OBS overview

4. Match output settings to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select settings the chosen OBS encoder supports and verify the output in YouTube’s stream health display. YouTube encoder settings
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended examples include 4 Mbps at 720p30, 8 Mbps at 720p60, 10 Mbps at 1080p30, and 14 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or connection can sustain those rates. Use the row matching the actual resolution and frame rate; the full table also varies by codec.

5. Test before making the stream public
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection and leave headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth room above the stream’s bitrate. YouTube streaming tips
- Start a private or otherwise non-public test using audio and movement similar to the intended stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and video movement. YouTube encoder settings
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, listen for clipping or unexpected silence, and verify that the media loops without an unwanted gap.
- Test what happens if the internet connection drops, OBS is closed, or the media source fails. Confirm how the stream is restarted and who will notice an alert; reconnect settings alone do not establish that the entire setup is fault-proof.
YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. A speed test and a successful encoder start do not prove that a 24/7 deployment will remain uninterrupted. YouTube streaming tips
What to verify before using FFmpeg unattended
FFmpeg is a reasonable candidate if you prefer to control a fixed stream through scripts, but the available official-source evidence does not establish version-specific syntax or behavior for looping, RTMP reconnect, or process supervision. Rather than relying on an unverified command recipe, check the documentation for the FFmpeg build you will run and test the complete deployment.

- Confirm the exact input-loop behavior, including whether playback restarts cleanly and what happens at the file boundary.
- Verify the output protocol, YouTube-compatible codec settings, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance.
- Test loss and restoration of network connectivity, encoder exit, source-file errors, and the restart mechanism you plan to use.
- Make sure a person or monitoring system can detect a failed process or unhealthy stream; an encoder command by itself does not establish process supervision.
Without that version-specific verification, FFmpeg’s ability to recover unattended should not be assumed. If the stream needs visual adjustments or operator intervention, OBS’s documented scene-based workflow is the more clearly supported starting point.

Latency and DVR
YouTube exposes latency and DVR controls in stream settings. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, while DVR lets viewers pause and resume during a live stream. Choose those options for the audience experience you want, then test playback under realistic conditions; they are separate from the encoder choice. YouTube encoder settings

Copyright and reused material
Use only recordings, music, images, and video you have permission to stream. A technically healthy broadcast does not establish that its content complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s policies. YouTube may detect or restrict material, so review applicable platform rules and rights before putting a continuous loop on a public channel. Continuous availability is not a substitute for original, properly licensed, or otherwise permitted content.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming video | Stream key, selected service or server, and encoder connection. | Confirm the correct YouTube stream settings are in the encoder, verify the key privately in YouTube’s control room, and restart the connection after correcting any mismatch. |
| Stream health degrades or disconnects | Upload capacity, connection stability, or bitrate exceeding available headroom. | Check YouTube’s health messages and actual upload capacity. Reduce bitrate or output demands if necessary, and leave the recommended 20% upload headroom. |
| The media stops at the end | Loop option not enabled or the wrong source type or file selected. | For OBS Media Source, inspect its properties and enable Loop, then test the end-to-start transition. |
| There is a pause, silence, or visible jump at each repeat | File boundary, source behavior, or separate audio/video timing. | Review the media boundary and test repeated playback. If audio and video are separate, verify they stay aligned over successive cycles. |
| OBS reconnects but the stream still does not return | Failure may involve the media source, application, or a persistent network problem rather than a brief lost connection. | Test the full recovery path, including restarting OBS and restoring the source, and decide how an operator will detect and handle a failure. |
| An FFmpeg stream fails after a disconnect or process exit | Build-specific reconnect behavior or missing process supervision. | Consult documentation for the installed version and test network recovery and process restart separately; do not assume a loop handles either case. |
