For a single devotional program produced on one computer, start with OBS and stream directly to YouTube. OBS creates and encodes the program; MediaMTX is a media server for routing, converting, recording, playing back, and forwarding streams. Add MediaMTX when you need those server functions, not simply because a channel is intended to run all day.
What OBS and MediaMTX each do
OBS produces the program
OBS Studio is the production and encoding end of this setup: it can compose a scene and send the resulting stream to YouTube. For one workstation sending one finished program to one destination, connecting OBS directly to YouTube is usually the simpler arrangement. YouTube’s setup guide explains how to enter its server URL and stream key in an encoder: YouTube encoder setup.
MediaMTX handles streams as a server
MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy. Its documented capabilities include accepting and serving streams over multiple protocols, converting between protocols, recording and playing back streams, forwarding streams, user authentication, a control API, and Prometheus-compatible metrics. It runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS as a single executable. Those capabilities can solve routing and server-side workflow needs, but MediaMTX does not replace OBS’s role in composing a program. Choose the simpler route that meets the channel’s needs

How to connect OBS directly to YouTube
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in public examples or shared configuration, and rotate it if it is exposed. The key tells YouTube which encoder feed to accept. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Configure OBS to send the program to YouTube. Enter the Live Control Room server URL and stream key in the streaming configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection in transit; its encoder settings guidance covers supported ingestion options and technical settings.
- Choose settings your connection can sustain. YouTube lists bitrate ranges according to codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not choose a bitrate just because it is the highest listed: test the sustained upload from the actual location and select settings the connection can maintain. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. Check its encoder page when configuring because recommendations can change.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm that video and audio reach the Live Control Room and that the picture, sound, and timing are acceptable. YouTube advises testing the stream and monitoring its audio and video quality. Its live streaming tips include checks for preview, failover, and local archive integrity.
- Write down a recovery procedure. Decide who will check the stream, how the encoder will be restarted or failed over, and how the team will confirm the live feed has returned. Test that procedure before relying on an always-on schedule.
When to put MediaMTX between OBS and YouTube
Add MediaMTX when the workflow needs a relay, protocol conversion, server-side recording or playback, or stream forwarding. A documented combined path is OBS scene and audio mix → MediaMTX → YouTube Live. MediaMTX’s OBS instructions describe publishing to the server using an RTMP URL and stream path, and also document publishing from OBS by WHIP. MediaMTX can then forward an incoming stream to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. The forwarding workflow documented by MediaMTX requires both audio and video tracks.
- Configure MediaMTX for the publishing method you intend to use. Use the current MediaMTX instructions for OBS Studio to set the server URL and stream path (or the documented WHIP approach).
- Configure forwarding to YouTube. Set the destination to the YouTube Live server URL and use the YouTube stream key as a credential. Keep it private in server configuration and restrict access appropriately.
- Test both links in the chain. Confirm that OBS publishes to MediaMTX, that MediaMTX forwards to YouTube, and that YouTube’s preview receives both audio and video. Plan how to notice and recover from a failure in either connection.
- Use recording deliberately. If you need a local archive, decide where recordings will be stored and how much storage the schedule requires. MediaMTX documents recording and playback, but the archive plan still depends on the channel’s needs and available storage.
For a single encoder and one YouTube destination, this extra server is not automatically beneficial; it adds another component to configure and monitor. Its value is in the routing, conversion, forwarding, or recording functions the channel actually needs.

Plan archives separately for a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous stream that runs beyond 12 hours should not be assumed to produce one complete automatic replay. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions or a separate recording workflow. YouTube recommends checking that local archive files are intact and growing; MediaMTX can record streams to disk, though the exact archive design depends on storage and channel goals. RTMPS or HLS?
For a straightforward encoder workflow, RTMPS is the sensible starting point: YouTube recommends it as a secure extension to RTMP. HLS is another YouTube ingestion route, including for certain codec or HDR workflows, but YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Use HLS when a specific workflow requires it rather than adding it without a reason. See YouTube encoder settings and YouTube HLS setup.

India-specific checks before committing to an always-on schedule
The software workflow and YouTube ingestion guidance do not establish the upload speed, power reliability, data cost, or availability of a particular hosting service at your location in India. Test sustained upload capacity and your recovery procedure from the actual installation. Check local connectivity and power arrangements against the channel’s own operating needs rather than assuming a particular ISP, cloud region, or backup device is required. YouTube’s encoder settings and live streaming tips provide the relevant testing guidance.
