To send a Restreamer channel to YouTube, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key, then enter the key in Restreamer’s Publication Service YouTube destination and start publication. Check that Restreamer reports a bitrate and, for a scheduled event, wait for YouTube’s preview before clicking Go live.
Before you start
- You need a YouTube account with access to YouTube Studio and a stream configured in Live Control Room.
- You need a working source already flowing through Restreamer. This setup configures the destination; it does not create a camera or video source.
- Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. Anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
Restreamer’s YouTube guide describes the Publication Service workflow, but does not identify an application version and was last updated three years ago. If labels differ in your installation, use the current Publication Service controls and the matching URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Restreamer documentation
Set up the YouTube destination
- Open YouTube Studio. Choose Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create a stream or select the existing or scheduled stream you want Restreamer to feed.
- Copy YouTube’s connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the URL and key paired as supplied; do not substitute a generic server URL. YouTube explains where to find the credentials in its streaming setup guide.
- Configure Restreamer. Open Publication Service, select the YouTube destination, enter the requested streaming ID or key, and save. Use the YouTube-provided destination details for the selected stream.
- Start publication and check the signal. Start the publication in Restreamer. Its guide says bitrate feedback appears in the main window once connected. If YouTube does not receive the feed, use the troubleshooting checks below.
- Go live in YouTube when required. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. Receiving a preview does not necessarily start the public event automatically.
Choose RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, adding encryption in transit. To use it, select the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room and make sure the sending encoder supports RTMPS; using an RTMP URL with an RTMPS connection, or the reverse, can prevent connection.
Restreamer’s general Publication Services documentation describes RTMP, HLS, and SRT publication, but does not establish that every Restreamer version exposes RTMPS in its YouTube preset. Use RTMPS only if your installed destination settings and sender support it. YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the protocol and server in the URL; if the service URL requires port 443, use that port, and confirm encoder support when a TLS connection times out.

End the stream without risking the archive
- End the event in YouTube Live Control Room first.
- After the YouTube event has ended, stop the publication in Restreamer.
The datarhei Restreamer YouTube guide warns that interrupting Restreamer during a live event may mean YouTube does not save the stream in its DVR archive. Its instruction is: “Always end the stream on YouTube first after an event.”
Troubleshoot a missing or unstable YouTube feed
