How to Run Restreamer on a Raspberry Pi for a Continuous YouTube Stream

A practical guide to installing Restreamer on a Raspberry Pi and sending a camera or other source to YouTube Live, with setup steps and reliability caveats.

You can run Restreamer on a Raspberry Pi and publish a camera or other video source to YouTube Live. The documented setup uses Raspberry Pi OS, Docker, and Restreamer’s web interface. A Pi can keep the service running, but the installation instructions do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation: reliability also depends on the source, power, device, and network.

What you need

  • A Raspberry Pi 3 or Pi 4. Restreamer lists the Pi 3 Model A+, Pi 3 Model B+, and Pi 4 Model B as verified models.
  • A memory card with Raspberry Pi OS installed, and Docker installed using the Debian ARM instructions.
  • A video source: for example, a Pi camera, USB camera, network stream, or an existing RTMP or SRT feed. You do not need a Pi camera if you use another input.
  • A YouTube channel that can start a live stream, plus the stream key and publishing details needed by YouTube’s current live-stream workflow.

The official installation guide describes ARM32v7 and ARM64v8 container options. Check that guide for the current image and commands rather than relying on an old copied image tag: Restreamer’s Raspberry Pi installation guide.

Install Restreamer on the Pi

  1. Install Raspberry Pi OS. Write the latest Raspberry Pi OS image to a memory card, then boot the Pi and complete its initial setup.
  2. Install Docker. Follow Docker’s Debian ARM installation instructions appropriate to your operating system and architecture.
  3. Start the Restreamer container. Use the current command and image in the official Raspberry Pi guide. Its example persists configuration at /core/config and data at /core/data, and publishes the ports used for the web interface, RTMP/RTMPS, and SRT. Preserve the persistent directory mappings so settings and data are available after a container restart. The guide says to use --privileged only when hardware support is needed; do not add it by default.
  4. Open the web interface. Find the Pi’s address on your local network and visit http://device-ip:8080/ui, replacing device-ip with that address.
  5. Complete the setup wizard. Select the input that matches your source, choose an available video profile, configure audio, and proceed to publication. The wizard includes fields for video metadata and a publication license.

Choose and configure a video source

Restreamer supports several kinds of input. The appropriate choice depends on whether the video is coming directly from a camera or is already being delivered as a stream.

Source When to use it
Raspberry Pi camera For a camera connected to and supported by the Pi. The camera is an input option, not a requirement for running Restreamer.
USB video device For a compatible USB camera or video device attached to the Pi.
Network stream For a source available over HTTP, HTTPS (including HLS or DASH), RTP, RTSP, RTMP, or SRT.
Internal RTMP or SRT input For a feed sent to Restreamer’s own RTMP or SRT service, such as from another streaming application.

During setup, choose a video profile that the selected source makes available. The official documentation does not provide a Pi model-by-model sustained encoding benchmark, so it cannot establish which resolution or profile a particular Pi will handle continuously. Test the actual source and profile you intend to use.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure audio and publish to YouTube

  1. Set the audio option in the wizard. Restreamer offers enabled sound, disabled sound, or a silent audio channel. If your source has no audio, Restreamer recommends a silent audio channel; some services, including YouTube, require an active audio channel.
  2. Check YouTube’s live setup. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream and use its current stream key and stream details in Restreamer’s Publication Service. Keep the key private. YouTube’s labels and requirements can change, so follow the current YouTube Studio prompts rather than assuming a particular field name or encoder setting.
  3. Use Restreamer’s YouTube publication path. Restreamer’s user guide says any configured video source can be sent to YouTube through the Publication Service. The guide index links to its YouTube instructions: Restreamer user guides.
  4. Verify the ingest before relying on it. Check YouTube’s preview and stream status, confirm that video and audio are present, and start the broadcast using YouTube’s current controls. A working Restreamer input is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a valid stream.

Use only video and audio you have the right to stream. A technically successful broadcast does not settle copyright or YouTube policy questions; check the applicable rights and current YouTube rules for your content.

What “continuous” operation does—and does not—mean

Restreamer’s container can be configured to restart, and its installation guide documents persistent configuration and data directories. Those are useful recovery measures after a process or device restart. They are not an uptime guarantee, and the official materials do not publish an endurance benchmark for a specific Pi or promise that a setup will stay live indefinitely.

For an unattended run, test the complete chain before depending on it: source availability, chosen profile, audio, network connection, YouTube ingest, and recovery after a container or Pi restart. The official sources do not specify a universal bitrate, minimum network speed, thermal limit, power draw, or maximum continuous runtime for this setup.

Troubleshooting

  • The web UI does not open: confirm the Pi is powered on and reachable on your local network, use its current address, and include port 8080 and path /ui.
  • The camera or input is missing: confirm that you selected the matching source type and that the device or network source is available to the Pi. A Pi camera is needed only for that specific input path.
  • YouTube receives video but no usable audio: revisit the wizard’s audio choice. If the source is silent, configure a silent audio channel when appropriate, then check YouTube’s ingest preview.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming stream: verify the Publication Service configuration and stream key in YouTube Studio, and confirm that the selected source is active in Restreamer.
  • The service does not recover after a restart: check that the container was started with the documented restart behavior and that the persistent configuration and data directories are mapped as intended. Test recovery rather than assuming it.
  • The stream drops during a long run: check the source, Pi, power, and network as well as YouTube ingest status. The documentation does not identify a single guaranteed cause or promise that a Pi will recover from every interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded video 24/7, StreamNeo avoids keeping a Pi or home computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
