You can generate a video test pattern inside FFmpeg and send it straight to YouTube Live—no video file, camera, or capture card required. Use FFmpeg’s lavfi input, pace it in real time, add audio if your stream setup expects it, and send the encoded output to the active YouTube ingest URL with your stream key.
What you need before you start
- An installed FFmpeg build that includes the
lavfisource, the encoder you plan to use, and the RTMPS protocol. Available components vary by build; consult the documentation for your installed version if FFmpeg reports an unsupported source, encoder, or protocol. - A YouTube Live broadcast and its current ingest URL and stream key. YouTube represents the ingest configuration separately from the broadcast; make sure you use the endpoint and key associated with the broadcast you intend to use. See YouTube’s liveStreams resource documentation.
- A chosen output resolution, frame rate, codec, and corresponding bitrate. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult its current encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
Prefer RTMPS when it is available in your workflow. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension of RTMP; use the configured ingest URL for your broadcast rather than assuming an endpoint is interchangeable. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Generate and send a test pattern
This illustrative command generates 720p video at 30 frames per second, pairs it with silent stereo audio, encodes H.264/AAC, and sends an FLV stream over RTMPS. Its example bitrate and other output choices are not universal recommendations; confirm the current YouTube settings for your selected codec, dimensions, and frame rate.
ffmpeg
-re -f lavfi -i "testsrc=size=1280x720:rate=30"
-f lavfi -i "anullsrc=channel_layout=stereo:sample_rate=44100"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
-b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"
Replace STREAM_KEY with the key from the active YouTube Live setup, and use the ingest URL configured for that broadcast. Do not publish the key in a script, log, screenshot, or support post: it authorizes publishing to your account’s stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the important options do
-repaces the generated input in real time. Without real-time pacing, a synthetic source may be produced as fast as the machine can process it instead of at a live broadcast rate.-f lavfi -i "testsrc=size=1280x720:rate=30"creates the video pattern inside FFmpeg. Change the dimensions and frame rate to match your intended output and the YouTube settings you select.-f lavfi -i "anullsrc=channel_layout=stereo:sample_rate=44100"creates silent stereo audio. It is included for configurations that expect an audio stream; adapt or remove it if your broadcast’s audio design is different.-c:v libx264,-pix_fmt yuv420p,-c:a aac, and-f flvare example encoding and muxing choices, not a guarantee that every configuration should use them.-b:v,-maxrate,-bufsize, and-gare example rate-control and keyframe settings. Choose settings using YouTube’s current guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not rely on the example numbers as a universal preset.
Set the output to match YouTube’s ingest settings
Pick the output resolution and frame rate first, then use YouTube’s current encoder table to choose the recommended bitrate range for the relevant ingest codec and those dimensions and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that applies to every stream. The command’s 1280×720, 30 fps, H.264/AAC, and numeric rate-control values are examples only.
The stream must be encoded and muxed in a format compatible with the ingest configuration, then sent to that broadcast’s active endpoint using its key. RTMPS is recommended by YouTube when available. If your YouTube setup provides a different configured URL, use that URL rather than copying the illustrative endpoint blindly.

Check the broadcast and troubleshoot connection problems
FFmpeg connects, but YouTube does not show the stream
- Confirm that the intended broadcast is ready or live and that you copied the ingest URL and stream key belonging to its configured stream.
- Read FFmpeg’s connection and output messages for authentication or connection errors, and verify that output frames continue to be produced.
- Check that the protocol and output format match the configured ingest workflow. Prefer RTMPS where available.
FFmpeg rejects the source, encoder, or protocol
The installed binary may not include the requested component. Check the build’s available components and the documentation for that exact FFmpeg build; a guide cannot establish which features an arbitrary third-party binary contains.
The stream connects but output is unsuitable
Recheck the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, pixel format, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the stream’s own ingest configuration. The example command is a starting point, not a verified universal preset.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual goal is keeping an uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than testing a generated FFmpeg source, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
