Choose hosting based on where the game is rendered. If the host must run the game and encode it, it needs suitable gaming compute—often a GPU-capable machine—as well as a stable connection to YouTube. If another device renders the game, or the feed is prerecorded, the host may only need to encode or relay video. A low-cost generic VPS is not a safe choice for game rendering unless its GPU and performance are confirmed for your specific title.
Start by identifying what the host has to do
“Streaming a game” can describe very different workloads. Decide which device creates the video before comparing servers: rendering a demanding game is not the same job as transmitting an already-rendered feed.
The host runs the game
Compare a local gaming PC with a remote machine that explicitly offers suitable GPU capacity. Account for the game’s system requirements, the encoder workload, remote access, and the network path to YouTube. AWS documents GPU-enabled EC2 as one cloud-gaming deployment pattern; that example does not establish that any particular EC2 configuration will run your game well (AWS Compute Blog, originally published October 27, 2021 and marked reviewed for accuracy in July 2025).
Another device renders the game
The host may act only as an encoder or relay. First determine how the video reaches it and whether the devices can exchange a stable feed. Do not assume a capture card is required: that depends on the source and connection method.

The feed is prerecorded or pre-rendered
Sending an existing video continuously can require less compute than rendering a live game, but the encoder or relay still has to deliver a valid feed. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast scenario in which video continues to be sent while broadcasts are managed (YouTube Live Streaming API documentation). An unattended prerecorded loop is not live gameplay; describe it accurately to viewers.
Compare local and cloud hosting against your workload

This is a decision framework, not a finding that either option is universally cheaper or more reliable. No reviewed source establishes a sufficient VM configuration, comparative provider prices, or guaranteed uptime. Check current regional pricing and actual capacity with the provider before committing.

Set YouTube encoder output and connection capacity
YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as streaming protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These figures cover video encoder settings. Audio, protocol overhead, other household or VM traffic, congestion, and connection stability also matter. A service plan or cloud instance that advertises a headline bandwidth figure does not by itself prove it can sustain your selected output. YouTube advises testing connection speed and choosing settings that produce a reliable stream.
Test with representative content before relying on the setup
- Choose the intended resolution and frame rate. Use a setting your game, encoder, and sustained upload can support; do not select a higher output solely because the host advertises high bandwidth.
- Configure supported encoder settings. Select an available YouTube-supported codec, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. It is YouTube’s recommended encrypted delivery option.
- Run a test with similar motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and movement. A static menu may not reveal problems that appear during fast gameplay.
- Monitor stream health during operation. Check the live control room or your chosen monitoring setup, and make sure someone or something can notice a stalled feed.
Plan what happens when something fails
A 24/7 stream needs an owner for detection and recovery. Decide what notices a dropped feed, how the encoder restarts, whether it reconnects automatically, and what happens after a host reboot or stream-key problem. YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes stream configuration and health concepts; its noData health status means the backend has no stream-health information, so it is not a complete monitoring or alerting design (YouTube LiveStreams resource).

- For a local host: a UPS sized for the computer and network equipment may help with brief power events. It will not protect against ISP outages, software crashes, hardware failure, or YouTube-side problems.
- For a cloud host: verify restart behavior, remote access, persistent storage requirements, GPU availability, and continuous compute charges with the provider.
- For either design: test the recovery path, not just the initial start. Confirm that the encoder can reconnect and that you can regain access if the host restarts.
These are operational precautions, not a promise of end-to-end uptime. The available sources do not establish a guaranteed uptime level for a particular provider or configuration.

In every case, size the connection for the encoder settings, test under representative conditions, and arrange monitoring and recovery. Neither a provider’s bandwidth headline nor a successful short test proves uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
