How to Add Live Captions and Translations to YouTube Streams

YouTube live captions can transcribe English, but translated captions require a different workflow. Learn the creator setup, caption-feed options, viewer tools, and limits.

You can enable YouTube’s automatic live captions for an individual stream in YouTube Studio, but the built-in live captions are currently English-only, may not be available to every channel, and require normal latency. They are not a creator-side setting for automatically publishing translated captions. For other languages, use a caption feed or a separate translation workflow; the right choice depends on whether captions must be selectable, who needs the translation, and whether the text must remain after the broadcast.

Choose the caption workflow that matches your goal

“Live captions” can mean several different things. A selectable caption track is different from translated text burned into the video or subtitles shown privately in one viewer’s browser. That distinction affects accessibility, who controls the captions, compatibility, latency, and whether viewers can turn the text off.

Approach Who sets it up What viewers see Language and stream considerations
YouTube automatic live captions Creator, per stream in YouTube Studio YouTube live captions; YouTube says they do not remain on the finished video English only according to YouTube Help; rollout is ongoing and normal latency is required
Supplied captions Creator or caption provider A caption track supplied with the stream Can suit professional or non-English caption needs; follow YouTube’s event workflow and its track/feed limits
Translation generated through Google Cloud Live Stream API Developer or streaming operator Generated captions or translations for supported HLS or DASH streams Not a YouTube Studio toggle; documented AI translation support is limited to us-west1 and europe-west1
Translated overlay, such as StreamTranslate’s advertised OBS browser source Creator Text baked into the video image Viewers cannot switch it off or restyle it as a caption track; feature and performance claims are the vendor’s
Browser-side subtitles, such as Trippi’s advertised Chrome extension Individual viewer A private subtitle overlay in that viewer’s browser Does not add captions to the creator’s stream; Trippi says its extension does not work in YouTube’s native apps

For accessibility, a selectable caption track is generally more useful than text permanently embedded in the picture. For a viewer who only needs a personal translation, a browser-side tool may be more appropriate. Neither overlay approach should be described as a caption track.

Turn on YouTube’s automatic captions for a live stream

  1. Open the individual stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the stream you are configuring.
  2. Open its settings and find Closed captions. Choose Automatic captions as the caption source when that option is available.
  3. Set the video language to English. YouTube Help, “Use automatic captioning,” states: “Automatic captions for live streams are available in English only.” This is not a setting for generating translated caption tracks.
  4. Use normal latency. YouTube lists low- and ultra-low-latency streams as limitations for this live caption feature. If captions are essential, choose normal latency before going live and allow for the extra delay it entails.
  5. Check the live output. Listen and watch for recognition errors, especially in names, technical terms, and important documentary facts. Correct critical information through your production or follow-up workflow rather than assuming automatic transcription is error-free.

YouTube describes availability as still rolling out, so the option may not appear for every channel. Its troubleshooting guidance also names more than 1,000 subscribers as a possible rollout eligibility issue; treat that as a possible explanation, not a universal permanent rule. The documented steps and labels can change as YouTube updates Studio.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Know what happens when the stream ends

Live automatic captions do not simply carry over as the caption track for the archive. YouTube Help says: “After the live stream ends, live automatic captions won’t remain on the video.” YouTube may create a new caption track for the VOD after the broadcast, and that track may differ from the captions viewers saw live. If the finished documentary must have accurate captions, review and correct the archived video’s captions separately.

Supply captions through YouTube’s event workflow

If English-only automatic captions are unsuitable, or you need more control, YouTube documents supplied captions using embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported software that sends captions over HTTP. This workflow is more involved than enabling automatic captions: arrange the feed as part of the event setup and verify that your encoder or captioning application supports the method you plan to use.

  1. Create or open the live event in YouTube Studio. Enable Closed captions in the event configuration.
  2. Choose the delivery method. Use embedded 608/708 captions if your production chain supports them, or use a supported caption-delivery application sending captions over HTTP.
  3. For HTTP delivery, obtain the signed caption-ingestion URL. Configure the captioning application to send its feed to that event-specific destination. YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, Caption Maker, and StreamText.Net as supported software.
  4. Allow for the instructed broadcast delay. YouTube’s event instructions call for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for this caption workflow. Follow the delay specified for your setup so captions can stay synchronized.
  5. Keep the feed topology within YouTube’s limits. YouTube permits one caption feed per stream entry point in the described workflow. Although the 608/708 standard can carry up to four language tracks, YouTube says it currently supports only one caption track in this embedded workflow. Do not assume the standard’s full capacity is available on YouTube.
  6. Test before the event. Confirm that captions arrive, remain synchronized, and use the intended language before relying on them for a live audience.

For a documentary with interviews, names, specialist vocabulary, or accessibility requirements, human-prepared captions can provide editorial control that automatic recognition does not. Check what your chosen caption provider or application actually delivers, including supported languages and compatibility with your encoder.

What “translated live captions” can mean

YouTube’s built-in live option

YouTube’s ordinary live-caption guidance documents English automatic captions, not a general Studio switch that publishes translated caption tracks for any live stream. Do not rely on per-viewer automatic translation options associated with a finished video as a guaranteed live translation feature.

A separate streaming API

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation describes generated captions and translations for HLS and DASH streams. This is a developer/configuration route, not an ordinary YouTube Studio setting. Its documentation says AI-generated translation is supported in the us-west1 and europe-west1 locations; language availability is tied to location. Confirm that the API’s protocol and delivery path fit your streaming setup before choosing it.

Text overlaid on the video

StreamTranslate advertises an OBS browser-source overlay for translated captions. Its product page describes the text as baked into the video. That can make translated text visible without a separate caption track, but viewers cannot turn it off or restyle it as captions. Claims on the vendor page about accuracy, latency, language counts, and price are vendor claims, not independently established measurements.

A private translation for one viewer

Trippi describes a Chrome extension that listens to audio from the open browser tab and displays translated subtitles for that viewer. The vendor says it does not work in YouTube’s native apps. This is a personal viewing aid: it does not add a caption track or translate the broadcast for everyone.

Reduce caption errors before and during a stream

YouTube identifies poor audio, speech it cannot recognize, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages spoken at once as conditions that can interfere with automatic captions. A clear microphone signal may help, but buying a microphone alone does not guarantee accurate recognition.

  • If exact wording matters, use a supplied caption workflow and test synchronization before going live.

Keep a pre-stream caption checklist

  • Decide whether the audience needs English transcription, translated text, or a private viewer-side translation.
  • For YouTube automatic live captions, confirm the option is available on the individual stream, set English as the video language, and use normal latency.
  • For supplied captions, confirm the caption application or encoder supports the chosen delivery method and that the event is configured for Closed captions.
  • For HTTP delivery, have the signed ingestion URL ready and account for the instructed 30- or 60-second delay.
  • Check audio clarity, speaker overlap, caption timing, and language before the audience depends on the captions.
  • Plan a separate caption review for the VOD; live automatic captions will not remain on the finished stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded documentary or a playlist you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud.
