The key alone is not the destination: YouTube needs the server URL and key to receive the feed.
Before you start
- You need an FFmpeg binary available on Ubuntu. The command-line method below applies once a suitable binary is installed; Ubuntu package versions and protocol support can vary.
- Your YouTube channel must be eligible to livestream. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Have a video or other input ready. The example uses a file and sends it in real time.
YouTube says a stream key is like a password and address. Treat it as a credential: do not include a real key in public commands, screenshots, shared logs, or source control. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- Open that stream’s Stream settings.
- Copy the displayed server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for this specific stream; do not guess or substitute a URL from another stream.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions distinguish the server URL from the stream key. FFmpeg commonly receives them together in its output URL: use the displayed server URL and append the key according to the endpoint format YouTube displays.
Build and run the FFmpeg command
Use this template for a file input:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Replace INPUT with your media file, and replace SERVER_URL and STREAM_KEY with the values from Live Control Room. All three are placeholders, not literal YouTube values. Follow the URL and key convention shown for your stream; do not append the key a second time if the displayed endpoint already includes it.
The -re option reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible, and -f flv selects FLV output for the RTMP-style destination. This follows the pattern in the FFmpeg protocol documentation. The codec settings in the template are illustrative, not universal requirements or a tested configuration. Check that your file’s resolution, frame rate, codecs, and bitrate suit your intended broadcast and available upload bandwidth.

Keep the command containing the key private. If you need to share a failure log, remove the key and any full destination URL first.
Choose RTMP or RTMPS

RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. FFmpeg describes it as streaming multimedia over an encrypted connection. Read YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance and the FFmpeg protocol documentation. To check what your own binary advertises, run ffmpeg -protocols and look for rtmp or rtmps; this is a local diagnostic, not a guarantee that every Ubuntu build includes the same support.

Confirm the broadcast in Live Control Room
- Start the FFmpeg command and watch its output for connection or encoding errors.
- Return to the matching stream in Live Control Room and wait for YouTube to show an incoming preview.
- For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live after the preview appears. Starting the encoder does not necessarily publish a scheduled stream by itself.
YouTube’s flow can differ for an immediate-start stream, which may create the watch page and go live when the encoder starts. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
No incoming preview
- Check that Live Control Room has the intended stream selected and that you copied its server URL and key exactly.
- Confirm the channel is enabled for livestreaming and has no applicable restriction. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- If a third-party encoder will not start, YouTube recommends generating a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout
- Copy the RTMPS URL specifically from Live Control Room rather than changing an RTMP URL by guesswork.
- Check that both the URL scheme and host use
rtmps. Try explicit port 443 where appropriate, as YouTube suggests for certain SSL errors. - Run
ffmpeg -protocolsand check whether the installed binary lists RTMPS. Support can depend on how that FFmpeg build was packaged.
The scheduled stream stays waiting
Wait until YouTube displays the encoder’s incoming preview, then select Go live for the scheduled stream.

The key was exposed or is rejected
Reset the key in Live Control Room, then replace it wherever the old key is stored, including any running FFmpeg command or script. YouTube’s key guidance treats it as a password-like credential.
