Measure the average power drawn at the wall by each complete setup while it runs the same stream, then apply your local electricity rate and operating hours. No controlled Chromebook-versus-desktop test establishes a universal winner or a reliable monthly bill.
How to compare the electricity cost
Use the same video, streaming method, stream quality, connected equipment, and measurement period for both machines. A plug-in electricity meter can measure the complete setup at the wall. Record its average watts while the stream is actually running; processor TDP, charger ratings, and a brief idle reading are not substitutes for that measurement. The practical measurement approach is described in iTechGuides’ 2026 electricity-cost guide.
- Connect the computer and all equipment you would leave on for the real stream, including a display and peripherals if they will remain powered.
- Run the intended stream workload and measure average wall power over a representative period. Repeat for the other computer with the same workload and equipment where possible.
- Calculate energy charges for the same operating period and local electricity tariff.
Electricity cost = (average wall power in watts Ă· 1,000) Ă— operating hours Ă— electricity price per kWh.
This estimates electricity charges only. It does not include hardware purchases, accessories, internet costs, or cloud-service fees. Do not infer a specific monthly bill or annual saving without measured watts, operating hours, and your tariff.

What belongs in a fair Chromebook-versus-desktop comparison?

Can either computer handle the stream reliably?
YouTube’s encoder workflow can support screen sharing, gameplay, external audio or video equipment, and more advanced productions. An encoder can be software or a hardware device. That broad guidance is not a guarantee that a particular Chromebook can run a particular encoder or sustain a particular production; check the exact model and software requirements before relying on it.
For an unattended stream, network stability matters as much as the computer’s power draw. YouTube advises ensuring total stream bitrate fits the available upload bandwidth, leaving room above the bitrate, using a reliable connection, and testing before going live. As YouTube puts it, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its streaming tips also advise previewing the stream, checking that it appears on the channel and watch pages, and monitoring audio and video quality.

Does ENERGY STAR identify the cheaper option?
No. ENERGY STAR’s computer efficiency guidance covers desktops and notebooks and considers modes such as off, sleep, and idle. The page says the computer specification took effect in October 2025 and reports that certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models. That is a general claim about certified computers, not a Chromebook-versus-desktop comparison under continuous streaming, so it cannot predict the savings for your setup.

If your 24/7 broadcast is prerecorded video rather than a live camera or produced event, running a computer at home is not the only approach. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded streams that do not require a dedicated PC. That does not establish that cloud hosting is cheaper overall: include the service’s current charges and terms alongside electricity and any other costs. A live camera or event may still require local capture and encoding equipment.
